Morse’s papers at the Library of Congress

While doing some research on the Library of Congress’ web site for a history paper I came across a Samuel F. B. Morse collection. It contains some very interesting information about Morse’s telegraph code, including a digital photo of the first telegraph message, in 1844. Another document, from 1837, shows one of his earliest versions. It’s interesting to see how his code has changed from this version, and I’m thankful it did.

If you click on the “Collection Highlights” link it will take you right to the “good stuff”

  1. Well, although I took a little time out to learn about our friend Morse, I also got some good information on a possible topic for my research paper, which unfortunately has nothing to do with amateur radio. I’m going to write on some aspect of the history of Islam in Afghanistan. My proposal is due Wednesday, so I’ll be busy this weekend reviewing my sources and coming up with a thesis. I hope to take at least a little time out for the CQ WPX CW, but I’ll probably only do a single band entry. Maybe 15M or 10M, if conditions are good enough.
