N1MM Software Topics

I saw this email on the N1MM reflector and recalled that there was some confusion about LOGTHENPOP & LOGTHENGRAB during the run up to CQWPX RTTY a couple weeks ago. The first email was cut from one from Rick Ellison, N2AMG, the digital programmer of N1MM, in response to a query on the reflector.

Subject: LOGTHENPOP vs LOGTHENGRAB

This should clarify as explained by the guy who wrote it…
Ken

“Log then pop allows more control as it allows the operator click on calls
that they see in the screen and stack them on the bandmap to work in
succession qfterwards(sic)…

Log then grab instead of using the bandmap just grabs the next available
call from the grab window on the Digital window. Sometimes you might be
grabbing a garbage callsign as some calls do not decode correctly and still
get placed in the grab window. So the operator needs to be aware of the call
that is being grabbed..

Thank you for that elucidation, Ken. I suspected as much from reading the manual’s description of where the “grabbed” calls came from, but with  no direct experience I couldn’t swear to it.

BTW, in the little time I spent working 80M this weekend I used ESM, and found it very helpful as long as I didn’t screw up the sequence by hitting SPACE too early. I just need to better train my brain and hand to the motions.

Gang,

Let’s include Rick in these discussions so he can stay up to speed as he learns N1MM Logger.  Does someone want to volunteer to put these e-mails on the Web site so we know where they are? Also, we need to start documenting all the little things we learn about the Logger during contests so we know where all the tricks are stored.
We had trouble this CW weekend with the program freezing on the Windows-7 computer that ran the Yaesu 1000MP or the side of the room where Ken’s K3 was used during the RTTY WPX weekend.  I found info on the FAQ (I think) for N1MM about how to install the logger on Windows 7 computers.  I didn’t see anything that looked unusual (make sure you’re Administrator when you install the software), but I do not have a Windows-7 machine.
I’ll be in contact via e-mail only through Thursday.

I have seen something somewhere in the last couple of weeks saying that Win7 problems, assuming that N1MM Logger was installed correctly, is probably caused bu RFI. I can’t imagine how RFI would cause problems with the software, but that is what was reported. It was recommended that ALL equipment have chassis’ connected together and to the station ground. It was NOT reported that this cured the problem with crashes.

The special installation instructions for N1MM on a Win7 machine are mainly about “where” to install it because of the Win7 “security” setup that objects to a program writing to a file in the \Program Files folder where N1MM (and virtually everything else) used to be installed. The default installation folder is now in \N1MM Logger folder. Also as Mike says, the installation should be made by right clicking on the installation file and selecting “Run as Administrator.”

Hi Guys,

I did not experience any major issues with N1MM this weekend, only a minor
annoyance on the computer connected to the FT-1000, every time I would click
on a spot to go work it, the software would put the rig in dual receive mode
which gives the headphone audio a whole new sound. Probably just a setting
that  I need to change somewhere, but finding the somewhere is the hard
part. I did not use ESM mode, just programmed the F-Keys as I have always
used them in Writelog.

Other than that, the weekend started out on record pace and stayed so until
06Z on Sunday when my K3 shut off, the FT-1000 did not hear any signals and
there was an alarm that I have never heard before that was beeping away in
the shack. Needless to say that after being up and on the rig for 30 hours
prior to all this, some mental chaos ensued.

Turns out that the alarm was an overvoltage alarm on my 12V power supply and
it had turned off the DC output. No 12V = no K3 and none of my other
switching widgets were working. I do not have a back up power supply and am
still off the air. Moral of this story is to know your stations Achilles
heel. Once I decide on what to replace the power supply with, I will be
getting two.

Hope everyone had fun….

  1. Just watched the 3 vids on LOGTHENGRAB and LOGTHENPOP and found them to be very educational. Larry, K8UT does a good job with them. The only thing I don’t like about LOGTHENPOP is that it responds to calls in the reverse order in which you put them into the stack, so you have to remember that the first station you want to work must be last into the stack (LIFO). I prefer FIFO but LIFO should be easy enough to get used to.

Your wish, even if it were only a thought expressed here, has been heard, sort of. The following note is with the announcement of ver 12.02.02 of N1MM. I have not downloaded this new version yet, but will shortly.

    Subject: [N1MM] Version 12.02.02 Released.

In digital modes, a new method of popping calls off the Call Stack has
been added, called “FIFO Mults First”. As the name suggests, when this
LogThenPop method is selected, callsigns will be taken off the stack in
order of their multiplier value. In contests where one QSO can yield 2
or 3 mults, the higher-mult calls will be taken first. Among calls with
the same multiplier value, FIFO (first-in-first-out) will apply – that
is, the earliest added will be the first popped.

Otherwise, this release only involves bug fixes and updates to a couple
    of rules links.

I think the player I have at home is the VLC Media player. I will check when I get home at the end of the week. Mike, K1DM

  4. Ken,

I replied below. I cannot figure out how to tell when a post has been made from within a forum or from within a standard post (I don’t even know what to call it). When replying to a forum post here, the reply goes to the bottom of the posts. When replying to a forum post from within the forum it goes below the post being replied to. When replying to a “standard” post from within the forum, the post goes to the bottom.

Is there a way to understand this process better so posts and their replies are better organized?

  5. In the experimental version, when you set up the Digital Call Stacking in the DI Setup menu, you are given 4 options…

    Enable using FIFO
    Enable using LIFO
    Enable using FIFO Mults first
    Disable

So you *can* select FIFO only.

Rick is still working out a couple of minor bugs but his experimental version (v12.2.22) works great. I suspect that this will be released as a public update shortly. If not, you can get the experimental version at :

    http://n1mm.hamdocs.com/tiki-download_file.php?fileId=992

This *must* be run on top of v12.2.2.

  6. I am replying using the “REPLY” link on your comment above. If there is a way to tell where a comment originates from or a method of being able to comment and know where it will end up, I have not discovered it. As they say on one of those popular TV programs… “Workin’ on it!”

  7. Thank you, Ken. I am very much looking forward to this release, and may install the “experimental” version for the NAQP RTTY contest just to check it out. I like the sound of “FIFO Mults First”, since that’s how I’d do it manually. Next, it would be great if, when deciding on which mult to select, the software took into account in which direction the beam is pointing, and then as you work through the mults, changes the heading appropriately. Not sure how much difference that would make, it would depend upon conditions.

As for the replies, we’ll just keep muddling through. This is also an experiment of sorts, and just like N1MM also dependent on volunteer efforts. Thanks!

  8. Crew,
I just watched the three videos. Very well done. I can see now how this can speed up things in the heat of battle. The LOG THEN POP feature should help. Can you still GRAB from the stack as old calls will scroll off the screen pretty quickly?
This weekend I hope some of you get to try these features. I have several other things scheduled for the weekend, so I will probably not get on for the NAQP RTTY since one of the events falls in direct conflict with the contest. So many choices, so few hours!

  9. Gents:
I have tried to discover a way to make the comments here, including the ones from the Forum, sort out by either newest, first or oldest, first. I have had no luck so far.

In the Forum for this posting, all comments are shown including those made here, AND they are all in a “newest to oldest” order. I haven’t foud a place, other than in Dashboard > Settings > Discussion where there is anything to adjust, and so far no setting that I found there has solved the problem of the Forum comments not being integrated with the Posting comments resulting with a common sort.

    I’ll keep looking…

This comment entered in the Posting comment box, NOT the Forum.

  10. Thanks, Ed. I didn’t realize you’re on the left side of our continent. I hope it’s for enjoyable reasons. No biggie on the replies, in the grand scheme of things it’s a small issue.

  11. Mike, I’m testing where my reply appears, by clicking on “Reply” in your comment, from within the Posts, not the Forum. My response to what I thought was your Forum comment is below. I’m trying to sort this all out. It will be interesting to see where notification of my appears on the Front Page menus.

  12. Crew,
I am inside the forum, and am typing in the “Leave a Reply” window. I didn’t look at the main page to get here so I didn’t see where stuff got listed.

Pat, you make a good point about the mouse. There are several layers of keyboard short-cuts, and I believe that knowing quick ways to get things done will increase our efficiency. Yes, I am much more familiar with CW, and need to practice more on RTTY. I am planning to get more practice over the summer and into the fall with all the “little” RTTY contests that I saw in the calendar.

Ed, hope you are having a relaxing time on the other side of the country. Don’t worry about things on this side, Ken will keep us out of trouble. There are so many options and ways to do things, and I know how much energy you have invested in this site. I appreciate your hard work and your tenacity!

  13. Hi Gang, for those using the K3 I’ve found you can load K3 command functions into N1MM macros. This is most helpful to play voice memories for those having the DVR recorder installed. Follow the instructions to record up to four voice mesages, M1-M4, and then setup the macros for SSB into N1MM as below. You can do this in notepad if you like. Just save it as a .mc file. You can use the remaining F Keys for whatever you like including .wav files. You should also setup the cat control PTT in the configuration file so that you can interrupt the playback with the ESC key. N1MM says that you can eliminate part of the below command strings to shorten the timing. I will try that when the ARRL DX SSB contest is over today.

    Enjoy!

    John, W1AN

    F1 K3 CQ,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT21;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT21;}
    F2 K3 EXCH,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT31;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT31;}
    F3 K3 TNX,{CATA1ASC K31;SWT35;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT35;}
    F4 K3 {MYCALL},{CATA1ASC K31;SWT39;}{CATA2ASC K31;SWT39;}

  14. For those K3 owners who do not have the DVR installed, N1MM also offers tha capability to record the .wav files using Ctrl-Shift-Fx to record and then immediate playback by pressing Fx. Very similar to the Write Log capability, but I don’t know if the keystrokes are the same. The only thing is that you must, as with WriteLog, have the mic plugged into the sound card and not the K3 and have the line out from the sound card going to the K3 Line In.
Check this URL… it is a long one so you may have to paste it back together.
