This turned out to be a contest not for the faint of heart. Keeping the BIC was not easy and I didn’t. Conditions were way down and reading the 3830 comments is like reading a sob story. Though my score was down from last year’s…so was everybody elses…except maybe YV2ZM. Did manage to work all US states except MT…but also missed KL7 and KH6 which count as DX…they usually make it into the log but not this time. I did make a significant imnprovement that was a must for this contest. I gave up trying to make my DXE 2-way beverage RX antenna work properly in both directions and “parked” it on South….put up another 1-way RX Bev for EU TNX to W1AN coming up with the transformer/terminator boxes on short notice. And in the shack fed them all to a single rotary switch that I mounted at chair seat level on the left side so I could make instant switching. I found myself often keyboarding with my right hand and riding the RX antenna switch with my left. This capability saved many a contact. Simple but decisive. Otherside I would have missed callers like the CE1 when listening in the wrong direction. Next up: ARRL DX SSB next weekend. 73! — John, W1XX
Not much fun in this one. Along with aquarium lighting QRN and now a new power line noise that is S9+ up into the 2M band and some aggravating pulsing from an electric fence 1/4 mile up the road, I wasn’t much into the contesting mood. I didn’t spend much time on Friday night but was able to manage about 8 hours Saturday night to accumulate a little less than half the score from last year. I did hear a KH6 station briefly and several zone 6, 8, 14, 15, 16 stations were worked. I enjoyed a few runs of 4-5 minute when conditions were good. Worked some of the usual suspects W1XX, KA1GEU and W1BYH of CTRI fame.
Oh, did I mention the plasma TV noise?
CW will be much better!

Well, you guys might have had better 160 conditons, but this was my 1st 160m contest (I think) and I had a blast. I pulled my first all-nighter in many, many years. I proved to myself that my beverage actually does work when I got a few European contacts that I could hear on the beverage, but couldn’t hear on the vertical. I obviously need to do more work on the vertical, soince I have to crank in a lot of inductance on the tuner to make it work. I worked W1XX, W1AN, W1CTN, and I’m sure one or two more from the club. 13 hours in the chair. Total score 43,365. Single Op High power.

Chris,
Great job!:) Welcome to the TOP BAND. I’m glad you had fun. Now, we have to get you up to speed so you can try the CW part of the contest. It’s even more fun! RUFZXP is your friend, get to know it well. You’ll be there in a few months if you keep at it!
73 and congrats! Mike, K1DM
Nice job, Chris! You had a great signal here of course and you have experienced the challenge of working the DX on Top Band. Condx were far from ideal…but you still did well. The 160 contests are a lot of fun….a bit frustrating at times…but knowing that you have made contacts “just above the broadcast band” is kinda neat. Congrats! 73! — John, W1XX
I didn’t plan on working 160 at all, since I was going to play in the NAQP RTTY contest, but I got a little bored, so fired up with my low dipole (10 to 30 ft up) and 300 watts. (No Beverages here !)
In 5 hours, was able to work 142 Q’s, 40 sections and 4 DX stations for 14,960. Glad to put in a few hours to represent CTRI here in MA. Time to improve the 160 antennas here !
Will probably play a little in the SSB DX test this weekend.
