I really got sucked into the great 6 meter conditions. Operated off and on during the weekend working tons of EU which were often pretty weak and a great opening to the West Coast Sunday evening. I almost got a nose bleed calling CQ all the way up to 50.277.5…the band was so crowded lower in frequency. There will no doubt be some great scores in this one. This is peak six meter opening time….worked about a hundred EU on SSB Friday before the contest and condx continued on for most of the weekend. Heard and/or worked: W1AN, KS1J, KA1VMG, NG1G, who else? Quite a few FN41s were on. Recruits for CTRI??? Next up for VHF contesting is the CQ WW VHF Contest July 21 -22 which may be kinda late for E-skip on 6 but we can hope….and it’s only 6 and 2 meters. 73!!!! — John, W1XX FN41ej
John, congrats on the substantial 6M total. I was antenna limited on 6M and had not planned on operating there. But band conditions were great and being familiar with how capable a wet string would be with the band open, how could I not try my HF tribander and a 160M wire vertical (with the radials coiled up at the bottom)? With 6M open and most of the single ops dedicating the time there, I wonder how many missed the 2M sporadic E opening into SD and WI Sunday night? The opening lasted over an hour until after contest close. I did not catch the opening at the beginning but still picked up three new grids out that way, EN04, EN13, EN44.
Worked NG1G, W1XX, KA1VMG of CTRI fame.

6m was simply AMAZING. I got on Sunday evening and played around. I didn’t make the EU opening because I was listening to NN1N run them for over one hour. It sounded like a good 15-m opening.
I ended up with about 50 Qs, which isn’t great, but I had fun. More later. 2 contests in one weekend means lots of paperwork afterwards.

What fun THAT was! This is only my third season on VHF and boy, I was not prepared for the excitement this year, especially after my experience in 2010 and 2011. I didn’t work near as many stations on 2M as I had before, but that was more than made up for by the conditions on 6M. I was only able to work one EU station, a G on Sunday afternoon, but I heard several others. At one point on Sunday evening I worked over 90 stations in one hour, which amazed me. Worked W1XX, W1AN, KS1J, KA1VMG, and W1CTN.

Sounds like y’all had a lot of fun!

Finally, here is the summary of my June VHF adventure on 6-meters
50 MHz CW 50 QSO’s 32 Grids 1600 points Time In Chair: 5:12
I picked up several new grids to add to my VUCC score! Next time I will try to get organized BEFORE the contest in well underway. I had to switch to the TS-480SAT and the regular station computer since I have not yet got my K3 set up to key on CW from the computer (W1AN-8) what is set up for RTTY.
It’s all part of learning. That’s why we practice!
