This weekend is the CW Sweepstakes weekend. Hopefully conditions will be as good as last weekend and everyone will get a clean sweep! Don’t forget that there are now 83 sections now that Ontario has been split up.

Ken, thanks for getting this up quickly.
My head hurts after this one, and it wasn’t even FONE!
I didn’t get to operate as much as I had hoped, but I finally got into the swing after a
couple hours in the chair. It was like the code being sent was in a foreign language,
but perserverance paid off, and I finally got into a rythmn.
I operated single-op all bands, high power, UNASSISTED to see if I could complete a
sweep without help, which did not happen AGAIN!:( But, I think I got closer than ever before.
My wires worked pretty good, but can’t compete with a Yagi. Ten meters was there for
the picking during daylight hours. I was not able to get on Sunday morning, so I probably
missed some good band conditions. My summary is below.
I worked KI1G, W1XX, W1AN (last call in my log, John – way to go!)
Now I just have to determine what new states I snagged for my Worked All States – 5 band

Had fun trying QRP but only got going late Sunday PM. Congrats to John ‘XX for pulling me out of the noise on 20m. VY1, KL7, and KH6 were surprisingly easy to work on upper bands with the Hexbeam. Even had a few decent runs on 20m & 80m…you RI big guns kept my run pileups late Sunday very manageable. Ken K3IU beat me out on 40m to K8JQ…worked the WV later first call. SS, still the best exchange around! Was thinking Norm W1BYH (SK), a SS CW perennial (and CTRI CG mbr & friend), was there in spirit! 73, Bill W1WBB
Category: SO QRP (no assistance). 5h 15m op time.
Whew! Great conditions for SSCW. I put in about 5 hours on Sat ewvening and had 79 Sections when I went to bed… missing GTA, WV, PR, and VI. PIcked up those up on Sunday morning and had a clean sweep by 0800 local. Now what to do for the rest of the day. 🙂 I stuck with it until mid afternoon when my brain fried and I crashed. Took a short nap and then dabbled for the rest of the day. By Sunday evening, things were pretty slim pickins. Running not very productive and very few folks calling CQ that I hadn’t worked already. Probably spent about 70% CQing and 30% S&P. N1MM says that my “On” time was just a bit over 15 hours. My recollection is that I worked W1XX, KI1G, and W1AN and if if forgot anyone else, my apologies. Once again, even though it didn’t seem like it during the contest, it seems that there are only two bands for sweepstakes… 40 meters and everything else. At least that is what my score looks like. 🙂

Comments: This should be renamed the “Can you keep your BIC Contest?” Usually I can’t. This time I took only two official breaks not counting the occasional mad dash to the la-vor-a-tory: 4 hours of sleep from 3 AM (which became 2 AM EST) to 7 AM (old time); 1/2 hour for lunch at noon. This avoids the gruesome last hour or so of the contest that can be compared to a root canal.
I was real lucky to get a clean sweep. Last to fall was SK. I had given up all hope of a clean sweep…but with two hours to go, I made a band change to 20 and the receiver landed right on VE5SF who I worked with LP rather than chance he’d be gone before I had re-tuned the amp…#83! Had several one QSO mults: VE6 on 15; a VO called me early; VY1 was way up in the RTTY band; N-something portable KP4 for PR. AK, PAC, and VI were no problem. WY was pretty late to get in the log but worked a second later.
Here’s my gripe list: (1) stations that send letter abbreviations like “N” and “T” (except like NR T## which is OK) in the exchange…usually sent at a gazillion wpm; (2) stations that think that the PREC is part of the NR and don’t leave a space between; (3) stations that proceed to send the exchange when you have the call wrong. Most stations send “NR” before the ### which does help to get you mentally prepared…so I like it…although by Sunday I could handle the ones that left out “NR.”
CTRI’ers worked: KI1G, K3IU, W1WBB. Can’t remember any others. Broke 1100 Q’s for the first time so I should be happy. 40 and 20 were the workhorse bands with 10 and 15 never really panning out for runs; 80 was only good when things were sparse elsewhere. If more stations were on Sunday the Q count could be a lot better…but in the latter hours it gets to be a real struggle to keep your BIC.
Sweepstakes is still where it’s at in domestic contesting. Phone in 2 weeks. — John, W1XX
Oooooops, also worked El Presidante, K1DM. Sorry, Mike! — John, W1XX
I was visiting with my sons Mike, Will and daughter in law Joanne in Newington Saturday to celebrate Mikes new job, so I didn’t get on the air until late Saturday night. As I quickly found out, the brain wasn’t prepared for a CW test. With half a mind I did a little S&P and then some runs in the wee hours on 80M until things got slow. Went to 40M to discover I must have an open feedline to the antenna in the dark cold outdoors somewhere. Went to sleep while thinking the big windstorm earlier in the week did some damage that would need to wait for daylight for a look see. In the morning I found I had a loose coax connection at a much lower elevation that took care of the 40M problem. Whew! I did get on for a few more hours but only intermittently. I ran LP, Unassisted, and took what I could get with the sections. VY1, KP4, KH6, KL7 called me. Missed NNY, VI, VT, AB, MAR, ONN, QC. Worked fellow CTRIers K1DM, K3IU, KI1G.

Congrats on great scores! This one I sat out but it looks like all that participated had a blast. Conditions have been really good the past few weeks and I hope they hold up for the CQWW CW.
