K1DM SS SSB Results for November 2013
I operated for 6.1 hours on Sunday afternoon/evening in the Unlimited Category. I ran high power (can’t imagine 100-watts) all bands (less 160-m) single transmitter wire antennas (no tribander needed).
My goal was to work new states for 5BWAS. I snagged Nebraska on 10, which was probably the only new one. This result was disappointing. Again, no sweep for Salem.
Here is the break-down:

Virtually no repeats on that band. Most bands were pretty good. I’m used to 100-watts, and phone really sucks with low power. Having the antennas up in the air just might have something to do with it as well.

Comments: This was a full 24 hour effort operating multi with an old friend from Connecticut, Bob K1XA. The clean sweep was no problem…as evidenced by working at least four NTs, always a tuffy. Conditions were close to super with 10 and 15 meters providing more than the usual supply of Qs…but not outdistancing the old standby bread-n-butter band 40 meters. That left little time or need for 80. It was nice to trade off operating time to keep from getting too zorched. There did appear to be a dearth of RI stations on with significant scores….with the usual “glad to work you in RI” comments. All in all, satisfied with the results. Sweepstakes still one of the best contests on the calendar! 73! — John, W1XX
Conditions were pretty decent with the SFI above 170 and the K and A indexes low. I enjoyed some good runs on all bands except 20M where it was tough to find a spot and I didn’t want to upset anyone. I also should have spent more time on 40. My last two sections for the sweep were SB and NL. SB came late Sunday morning. I finally worked VO1KVT in NL 2334 Sunday on 40M just after he popped up on the spotting network. I could hear him weakly Saturday on 15M and 20M but could not make it with all of the loud stations further west calling. The skip zone is real. It was great to hear the many QRP stations active. Talk about pain, but I was able to get the info from the 29 I worked. FYI, 300 “A” stations and 143 “B” stations were worked.
I worked W1XX and looked forward to seeing the fantastic score. Congrats! Were James K1SD and Mike K1DM the only other CTRIer I worked?
A fun time. I only wish I could keep the BIC time longer without falling asleep or the legs cramping up. Hi!

“I’ll trade five Alaska’s for one Newfoundland, Monty” Nine AKs in the log; heard NL once very weak under a massive pile; never heard again. Some mults were just never there for me this year. Never heard a hint of DE, ONN, or WCF (!) either. It’s always great to chat with folks that live in some of my old haunts or someone who used to live in RI. Sometimes it’s OK to let the rate suffer a bit.
Worked John W1AN for my CT mult (my #40/his #9) on 10 off the back of his beam. Heard John W1XX a couple of times doing S&P but never worked.

According to my brief research, John’s W1XX score tops the RI multi op record of 285,190 set by K1NG in 1997. It also sets a new New England record topping the 291,400 set by W1AW in 2000.
