2014 CQ WPX RTTY Contest Results

Good morning, gents:

Please post your results for this contest by adding a reply/comment to this posting. I have been down with a “cold” since last Tuesday (first one in 3-4 years) and am still feeling the effects so I stayed here at home rather than travel to W1AN to help out. Conditions seem to be pretty good and I am sure that stacked yagis on 15 meters at W1AN have been getting a good workout.

    Comments:

Conditions seemed better Saturday. 2Tone definitely outperformed MMTTY but kept
locking up, installed the latest version during a break on Sunday and the
    lockup issue went away.

    Worked W1CTN, W1AN, KS1J, K3IU, K1DM and K1SD, hope I didnt miss anyone am a bit tired.

  3. Because of my first “bad cold” in 3-4 years, I opted to stay at home rather than infect everybody at W1AN. I operated intermittently for a total of about 12 hours BIC time. I recall working KI1G and W1AN, heard W1CTN, but no other club members. I am getting over my “cold” but now Anne feeling terrible. I knew that would happen!

Don’t forget!!! Logs must be submitted bu 2359 UTC 14 Feb 2014 (that’s 6:59PM EST this next Friday)

  4. Contesters,
This weekend I had some fun with the CQWW WPX RTTY contest. John, W1AN kindly
allowed me to use some of his equipment and antennas, as well as electricity and
hospitality. I operated with high power and internet assistance on all bands.
I was able to invest 9.9 hours in the chair.

    Band QSOs
     160m -
      80m 36
      40m 84

      10m 72

    Total: 382, Score: 253,870

The 15-m stack continues to work well, no matter what direction it points.
The TA33 at 100 feet also plays sweetly on 10 meters. Hopefully, I picked up a
new country or two on 10 and 80. I still have to double check that.
I was able to work FT5ZM on 80, and then I caught them on 20 when I got home.
I thought conditions were pretty good most of the weekend. I hope you had fun too.

    Comments:

Got a late and very slow start. I had cataract surgery on Thursday (just one eye, so I could still see, kinda, sorta) and a root canal on Friday. Yeah, I know, excuses. So, on doctor’s orders (Dr John W1AN) I took my medicine (he said to have a glass of wine) and operated. Friday and much of Saturday were a blur but I started having fun Sunday.

    Fellow CTRIers in the log: W1AN, KI1G, K1DM, W1CTN, KS1J

  6. Despite the propagation numbers on Sunday, conditions seemed pretty good. I only got on for about 12 hours or so while fixing kitchen ceiling (leaky radiator valve in upstairs bedroom).

    So my SOAB LP

Won’t be active for the ARRL DX CW but should be QRV for the ARRL DX PHONE contest.

I operated under my own call in this contest for the first time in a long while. Mike K1DM and I shared antennas so we could both get time on the most productive bands. Both of us were “in want” of more 40M 6 point time. 15M was good all weekend. The stacked 5Els worked well. 10M was good for short parts of both days, likely because of the high A index.

2Tone worked great for catching calls and NRs that MMTTY missed. For the fluttery/watery JA signals I switched profiles in MMTTY which also helped.

I used Log&Pop and ESM in N1MM for the entire contest. It does require more concentration but my biggest trouble was canceling a stacked call. If the call in the ENTRY window needed to be manually edited, the old call was improperly added to the stack. Then Log&Pop would bring the bad call up as the next Q. If someone has a configuration fix, please share it. Maybe the clear button in the GRAB window could somehow be used to do this.

It seemed to me that activity was down a bit on all bands. The rates were not as good as I expected, and I took way too many short breaks that ate away at my max 30 hours. Worked K1SD, K3IU, KS1J and KI1G.

Hope to see you all of you in next weekends CW test.

    73, John, W1AN
