2014 CQWW CW Results

Please post your results for the CQWW CW contest here for inclusion in the CTRI Champions competition. I didn’t hear/work any other club members,  but I suspect that there were others out there.

  1. Single Op Low Power Assisted. Heavy Power Line QRN especially on path to EU. Almost completely silent towards Carib, SA and Pacific. Not the full effort I put in last year but spent some time. Conditions were most excellent.

Heard no one from the club except Rick.

  2. I was in Maine last week visiting family for Thanksgiving and returned home late Saturday afternoon. Obviously not a big effort here with Logger only showing 5.5 hours BIC time. Also I didn’t want to miss the Pats game, but perhaps I should have stayed at the radio.

  3. Good grief! Not one of ours, but 3830 is showing CN2AA (M/M) with almost 77 MILLION points. That is difficult for me to even imagine.

    Comments:
What is the most annoying aspect of this contest? Yes, stateside stations calling for zero points while making it difficult to copy legit DX calling. A certain W2 with a 599 signal would not give up for the longest time as I continued to answer DX replying to my CQ. Finally, he was the only one calling. What was my next move? QRT…or big-time QSY. Perhaps a little selfish of me, but I did not work a single stateside station. I would QRT or QSY. As I see it, this is a real problem especially in the USA. K3LR and W3LPL must work hundreds of stateside dorques. The supposed reason for allowing same-country-to-same-country QSOs is to work the zone. Unless I am missing something, this is faulty reasoning.

If a USA station can’t work Canada for zones 3,4,5….they shouldn’t be in the contest. Vice versa for VEs. Disallowing same country QSOs might seem a problem for JAs (zone 25). But they could work Korea (HL)…usually not difficult for them. I wonder how much of a problem it is for JAs to be constantly called by other JAs?

This might be a problem for a few rare countries…but being rare, they might miss their zone anyway.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? …perhaps bring it up with K5ZD CQ Contest Director?

  5. Maybe the certain W2 had already worked a zone 5 Canadian and needed to work you for a country mult (USA). The rules say you get (0) points for same country but can get mult credit for your own country and zone. It is annoying, but I don’t think it will be changed ‘cuz it would change the whole flavor of the contest, i.e., the rules would have to say one can only work stations other than in your own country… sorta like the ARRL DX contests.

  6. Ken & Co: Egads! I knew I musta missed something. You also get COUNTRY multiplier. I musta been the only USA station to not get credit for USA on any band. That’s 6 mults down the drain because of my obstinacy. I deserves it! But I don’t think your ARRL DX Contest comparison holds water….DX cannot work ANY DX …only USA/Canada. Now…would outlawing working your own country in CQWW be disruptive of tradition, past records, etc.? Did CN2AA work his won country on 6 bands? Probably so. How about VU4KV? There must be lotsa rare stations who do not work their own country. That’s an unfair advantage to countries that have more than one station on. Any more grist for the mill? — John, W1XX

  7. I put the ARRL DX in just to test you, John. 🙂 Actually my brain was just focused on US operators.

I don’t think it is unfair advantage any more than the poor guy in New England running 50 watts to a low wire not being able to work a station in China or North Korea. I can make an argument that the “rare” stations have a distinct advantage over a station in say, Italy (or other entity populated by many hams), just because they are so rare. The rest of the world is piling on to work them. However, I cannot produce any statistical analysis to prove my case, so this is the end of the line for me on this subject!

  8. Too many other things going this weekend to get very serious plus I had my years worth of QSO’s during the W1AW/1 event a couple weeks ago.

  9. SOAB LP(A) – Just went DXing for new DXCC band slots and new PFXs. Was away ’til Saturday night so minimal time invested. 3D2, 5X, 7O2, 8Q7 (40m!), 9M2, E2, SU0, TX8, UP2 (40m), and V6 among choice DX worked. Propagation appeared great… the kilowatts from around the world were loud! Worked 9Y4 and HC8 on 160m (both rare on TB) Sunday nite 2.5 hrs *after* contest with FB quiet band condx! 73, Bill W1WBB

  10. John – USA Zone 5 on 10m and USA Zone 3 80m/160m for instance can sometimes be a real challenge to work in this contest for us in W1, esp as low power stations. I won’t call a needed USA Zone station who’s working a big DX pile-up but will try them if they have few/no callers. Often I will work them late in the contest when they are not busy as a good operating practice…and thank them for the mult! Also, some callers (and Big Gun ‘runners’ like you!) are now using the new 24-hr Classic category or are op-time limited so they may not be available later to work that needed USA band/zone mult. So, like dupes, it is usually faster/easier to work ’em and move on!

Agree, the zero-point (but sometimes necessary) QSO in CQWW is a strange thing…and likely frustrating for those with big signals. Such is the nature of the event. And I shed few tears for 7O2A and VU4 who, while they missed their own country (and zone too??), had built in pile-ups ALL weekend! My contesting 2 cents worth :^)

Appears your re-raised 80m vertical is working. FB!! 73, Bill
