Station 2 was ready for anyone who would stop by. Mike K1DM and KB1RFJ enjoyed
the chair time, but the second station was idle most of the weekend. Except for
10M band, conditions were good. The SFI of 120+ and low atmospheric noise made
copy easy. Both MMTTY and 2Tone worked great together.
This was a daytime and early evening contest for us. A part-time,
casual operation. Enjoyed it. Worked K3IU, KS1J, KI1G, K1SD.
All the equipment worked flawlessly. The stacked 5EL 15M mono-banders outperformed my expectations and the 4EL 20M at 112 feet worked great as well.

A little less than 14 hours BIC time. For some reason my 40 and 80 dipoles are putting RF-in-shack and causing the amp to go weird. Hasn’t happened in the past when full power from amp caused no issues. So I guess I need to drop those antennae and check everything out. I worked W1DX, KI1G, K1SD, and heard KS1J but he wasn’t hearing me. Only a little runnin’ ‘n gunnin’ here. Mostly S&P as I was in and out of the shack during the contest.

Spent a few hours in between working around house and enjoying the great weather. 15 meters stayed open longer than I thought and 10 was deader than I thought! Sigs on 40 were surprisingly strong.

Man, do I miss 10 meters. 440 fewer Qs than last year; 470 fewer Qs on 10m alone! AND the associated 100 less mults! 15m picked up some of the slack, but not nearly enough. Yeah, I operated a little less (25 vice 28 hours). Last year I was #4 USA; this year I’ll be very lucky to break the top 10 (Right now I’m #10 on 3830 claimed scores).
I did have some very good runs; 15m was consistently good to me; 20m too; and 40m was very good several times during the weekend, but incredible for the last 2 hours Sunday night; FUN.
Some interesting moments:
I snagged the E51AAR (So. Cooke Is) on 20m late Sat night. Heard him a few times on 15m; he was loud but I couldn’t break through the pileup of the unruly mob. Good things sometimes happen: he calls in during a run on 15m Sun afternoon for the new mult.
During a run on 20m Sunday morning I had this interesting sequence:
1122 RA0R Z 18
1123 UC0W Z 18
1124 RK0W Z 18
1124 AA5AU Z 04
1124 UF0W Z 18
Maybe they were all in the same shack?
I had very few frequency fights this time; although K1IMI (who I couldn’t hear/see) and I shared 21.085 for several contacts before I moved on; I’m sure both of us have some busted Qs.
During a meager run on 80m late Saturday night, Rick KI1G calls in, and as we usually do, go through all 5 bands to secure that often elusive RI mult. Ken K3IU and Jim KS1J call in to boot. I find W1DX for 3 of my CT mults.
I used SO2V a lot more during this test. Thanks to Ken K3IU and John W1AN I was able to get SO2V working quite well with FSK, N1MM+, MMTTY, and 2Tone. It was a smooth, consistently reliable transition between VFOs A and B and made it a lot more interesting and productive (now to find the $$, acreage, towers, radio, and antennas to go SO2R).
One final note:
Somebody please contact The Men in Black to pick up Rick KI1G and send him back to planet OHMYGOD:
3106 Qs, 712 mults, 5,448,224 points, in 44! (GD) hours!!! Way to go!!
