    Comments:

Local noise on 40 — steady hash or static — wiped out my bread-n-butter band and any intentions
at a full effort. It turned into a casual taking many breaks operation…and not losing any sleep.
Will be looking for the source today (Monday)…suspect internal. Didn’t get the clean sweep til late Sunday afternoon when VE3CX in ONN called in. Surprisingly, VT was the penultimate to fall. Got the usual tuff NT and VE6 in the first hour. It seemed that RI was pretty scarce….more than one somewhat big gun told me that I was their last section. Worked KA1VMG, W1AN, K1SD…and a couple of RI’s whom I don’t know.

Updated to N1MM+ finally to get some practice in before the CW test next weekend. Working great.

Had all section worked S&P by Saturday evening with the exception of SD. Got
SD as my first QSO and last section on Sunday. Went into serious run operation mode late Sunday.
Decent conditions and lots of fun.

    Comments:

Propagation conditions were not too good here to start the contest on Saturday. Things got worse when my mic (Heil Proset w/ HC-4) started going intermittent. Distorted speech, keying the transmitter for no reason, inconsistent operation. I disassembled it and could not identify anything obvious. Put it back together and it seemed better. Operated for a while longer but it recurred. It put a big damper on my enthusiasm.

John W1AN called in Saturday night on 80m. Worked AB1JV in RI on 80m for mult #81 for my last QSO of the day late Saturday night (actually early Sunday morning). Finished Saturday lacking only DE and AK.

Found Bill W1WBB Sunday morning on a pretty vacant 10m band. Found the DE Sunday morning and the AK Sunday afternoon for the sweep. Had to repair the mic again Sunday mid-day; so I was off the air for big chunks of time. I was making some contacts on 15m Sunday afternoon; got a report of distorted audio; fiddled with the mic; next few contacts said audio OK. Found John W1XX who reported bad audio again. So I pulled the plug and went and spent some time with the wife. Later I took the mic apart again, put it back together and tried it again for the last hour of the test.

I’m glad I did. Got back on at 0208Z running on 3756; the first to call in was K1ZZ. In the next 51 minutes worked 93 QSOs; 108 per hour; with 3 logged at 0259! That was fun! During that last hour, at 0245Z a station called in with s/n #001 and another at 0258 with #041! That’s cool.

Earlier Sunday I was telling Carole about my woes with the mic. She said “I guess you need to get a new one. What would you get?” I said the Yamaha CM500. She went on line and ordered it for me that afternoon; Christmas is coming a little early!

  4. I took a complete pass on this one. But it looks like you guys had some fun. Sorry to hear about the noise John. Nothing is more aggravating. Last year I had a terrible situation as John W1AN can attest. That went away and now I have garbage every 5 khz probably from some junky Plasma TV. Conditions did seem pretty good and I am hoping they hold up for the CQWW CW test this weekend.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all

    Jim KS1J

  5. I completed the sweep for one station who needed RI as final mult while on 80m. Looks like RI was slim pickens on 40m overall. Just a few hours here and there on Sunday.
