Here is my contribution to the collective efforts of the membership. I worked W1WBB, W1XX, W1AN and heard KS1J ( I think). My greatest distance worked was Arizona and he must have had very good ears. Only DX I worked was the VP9/N3**.

Spent a few hours. Conditions didn’t seem all that bad. Working on a slightly better receiving antenna in the form of a BOG. I will let you know how it works out. It wasn’t ready for this contest but should be by the time the CQ 160 rolls around. Heard quite a few RI stations that I normally don’t hear on other contests. John W1XX signal was the best besides W1OP which is just about up the street from me.

I had to run the K3 with the noise blanker and noise reduction on to help with the electric fence and other hostile QRN. Other than the man made noise conditions were good, but better Friday evening than Saturday. Also there was much QSB to contend with. There were 95 5 point contacts, mostly EU with some Caribbean and South America. These included C6, KP2, KP4, PJ2, PZ, TI, VP9, XE and ZF. I had 19 DLs answer my CQs along with 7 ON, 5 UR, 6 G, 5 SP 4 PA… I missed working sections WTX, LAX, ORG, PAC, SB, SF, SJV. I plan on brewing up some new beverages to help towards the west. The ESP QSOs were many, as were the dupes. Turns out a EU station spotted my call wrong and created a pileup I didn’t need. People need to listen.
All in all I’m happy with the score. I did miss the sunrise Sunday morning. I was just too wasted to get up.
Worked K3IU, W1XX, W1WBB, KS1J, W1CTN.
Next here is a Multi-Single 10M test. Anyone interested?
Station: K3, AL1200 @ 1KW, Wire T vertical, 2 Beverages.

Comments: Let’s start with the good news. As of this morning Tuesday, my NOISE is GONE. It was wiping out 40, bad on 80, and during the contest on 160 prevented operation above 1860 and sometimes below. But was able to live with it. Compared to last years score, equaled QSO count (with more hours this year) and improved mults significantly. EU was pretty strong the first night…not so strong the second. The DX like the CQ contest in January better! They are probably baffled by the use of ARRL sections. Biggest problem was working California. Had all my 7s filled before working my first W6. And missed usually easy ones LAX,SB, and SJV in six-land. Seems every 6 I worked was in Sac Valley. Missed NT and AK — not unexpected — and just about everybody missed WTX. Operated straight thru the first night, but couldn’t hack it the second getting some shut eye from 6PM – 10 PM. Sunrises were disappointing. Best contact was KH6LC (he always finds my CQs) who was one dog biscuit above ESP. Most EU contacts were from running…which is nice. Worked several RI’ers and CTRI’ers. These overnight contests are wiping me out…have to ask why do I do this? Gess I’m nuts. 73!! — John, W1XX
Good activity from the CTRI 160m regulars. Things appear to be slowly improving on Topband as we slide down Solar Cycle 24.

Comments:
Nice quiet band both nights… except an apparent local QRN source which cycles up to S9+ then back to nothing in irregular waves every few seconds which is a real nuisance for weak sigs copy. The lack of any storm noise/static crashes all weekend here was great on the ears!
With very favorable low A/K index forecast on Day 1 I put in strong effort first night. After S/R Day 1: 417 Q’s/72 mults/62,208 pts. Kept at it 2nd night thinking 100K pt goal was too optimistic. But, a solid run from 0420-0500Z and decent Eu S/R enhancement later in the eve helped the Q/mult count. Crashed after 0730Z once I was a bit over my goal. Had hoped to catch last hour+ before my sunrise but overslept!
Best score and overall conditions in 5 years from here. Worked 17 5-pt QSOs and 16 DX mults; 11 Eu contacts and 6 with N/A, S/A. DX Mults: 9A DK EI G GM GW OK OM ON SP C6 PJ2 TI VP5 VP9 XE. For sections, 3rd year since 2009 with 66 total… missed (but heard some) PR, WTX, all of Calif/PAC, NV, EWA, AK and VE5 + NT. WCF, NE, WY and VE4 worked much later on day 2. Strange how it goes on 160m — 4 OR, WWA, BC, AB but no W6!
While chasing spots Saturday eve found many, many bad calls as if someone was intentionally mis-spotting just to mess with us. Another challenge to contesters!
Thanks for the Topband QSOs and 73! Bill W1WBB
