The first nite had very challenging and discouraging noise conditions with multiple
repeats one letter at a time to get full calls. Took long break and got back in
late for a couple hours when noise subsided a bit. Second nite was close to a
repeat of the first nites noise. Many EU callers 11PM on, so I stuck with it
for a few hours. Many thanks to those who had the patience to hang in. Nice W1XX score!

This was a tuff slog. QRN was horrible especially 1st nite. Gave up more than once only to return later to punish myself some more. Worked mostly the nosebleed section (>1900) to avoid QRM which for the most part worked as EU stations did call me with some regularity during the wee hours. However, some stations don’t have antennas wideband enough to cover the upper end of the band. There were peak activity times where I tuned from the low end up to find a run frequency and couldn’t find a clear frequency ’til about 1940 or so. Score is down by 28% from last year…but everyone had the same QRN problem…with basically lower scores. No doubt the “RI” mult helps. CTRIers I can recall worked: W1AN, N1EYE, KA1VMG, K3IU. Went back to ole reliable FT-1000MP…I like the new K3S on CW but still not convinced it’s for me on phone. The 3-weekend contest extravaganza continues next weekend with ARRL DX phone. If you can talk, you can operate this contest. So give it a shot. 73! — John, W1XX
