A part time effort for me this weekend. I spent most of Sunday working on my presentation for the zoning board. I’m applying for a zoning variance to put up an “antenna support structure”.
This was a 100% S&P event for me. The bands were really crowded and, during the short time I was on, I had no problem getting contacts. This was an easy contest to run assisted. The spots were fairly accurate, althogh I wonder if someone was putting in some bogus spots on purpose on Sunday afternoon. I had a slew of them that had one wrong letter in the call. I heard W1XX, W1AN, and probably more. W1AN was all over the place! Looks like you guys did a great job.
Anyway, about 8 hours in the chair. Single Op High Power assisted. 93,456 points.

On and off effort for me, as I ran assisted and strictly search and pounce SOAB High Power. Someone called it “like shooting fish in a barrel !” Ten and Fifteen were pretty good here, and I was rather surprised to have several stations remark positively on my signal. I did seem to be able to break through several really messy pileups, although I walked away from some that were absolutely crazy. Got the contacts later when things had quieted down. Worked a bunch of stations on five and six bands each.
QSO totals:
160 6Q 5M
80 65Q 47M
40 82Q 53M
20 151Q 72M
15 191Q 73M
10 112Q 45M
Total q’s 607 and 295 Multis for 537,195 score.

Comments: This was a case of indecision. What to do? It started out Friday night as an 80 meter single band effort. Though I was doing all riight…I worked everyone I called…but the European 100 watters were simply not coming through. Result? No runs = tedious. Then a few stations wanted me on 160. Next thing I’m working stations on 160 where there was lotsa static Friday night. To get some action finally moved over to 40 with some off and on operating including some sleep. RI must have been in demand as I could tell when I must have been posted as the 40 meter EU pileup was tremendous. Took most of Saturday daytime off… So didn’t even touch the high bands until Sunday. End result was an all-band effort. 15 seemed pretty good but 10 was not so good. Again tremendous pileups on 15 and 20 on Sunday from stations needing RI I guess. Here’s a “I’m sorry” to Chris: Sorry I worked TO11A on 10 when you were calling him…..I waited several times and he wasn’t hearing you…hope you got him later. Hope your tower project goes well. I’m still available for any help. CU all at the next meeting. I hope to contribute to the “pileup management” discussion. Fighting “encroachment” was a big part of this weekend. 73!
I was prepped for a possible casual M/S, but wasn’t certain who would be over and had no commitments for Friday so Nancy and I went out for dinner and Neil Sedaka’s show at the MGM theatre. I left the door open for any surprise operator who might stop by. After the show, I was able to start at about 11PM. The lower band conditions were very noisy and with strained copy, but I did end up with a few hundred Qs before Saturday morning. Dan N6ERD made it over Saturday, bringing better band conditions with him. Once here, most of the time, it was he who was in the chair. I just didn’t have the heart to tear him away as he was having so much fun, so we just kept him fed and the coffee coming and he was a happy camper.
The higher bands were good and watching the mult spots build from the packet cluster was what would trigger our band changes. Sometimes I think we waited too long to switch bands. Heard W1CTN, KA1GEU and W1XX.
We were able to edit N1MM’s function keys to trigger the K3s voice recorder memories for CQing, handling exchanges and dropping our call in when doing S&P. This saved the vocal chords and allowed some breaks to down the coffee and a few snacks.
The score is about 450,000 above last years casual M/S.

Just a very few hours here and there all S&P looking only for new band/country mults for DXCC Challenge on LoTW, as well as new IOTA (Island on the Air) mults. Ran SOLP AB Assisted using the spotting network primarily. A fair amount of ‘waiting in line’ for me for the many needed (ie. rarer) mults. Best (worst?!) example was TI still needed on just 10m…W1/W2 was hearing them but no reciprocal propagation — finally/barely completed a single Q late Sunday after many calls to 3 TI stns. Brutal at times on SSB w/ LP.
Good news – Did manage to bump my LoTW DXCC Challenge totals above 800 (all LP!). Numerous new IOTAs worked as well. Best QSO of weekend was NOT in the contest – worked 3C0E on 20m CW after just a few minutes…better lucky than good in this case!
Noticed condx Sunday on upper bands to Eu seemed somewhat poor…signals way down and bands opened late likely due to initial effects of M-class solar flare earlier that morning. Big fireworks on ‘ol Sol today with multiple M and an X class flare…just 2nd or 3rd this solar cycle upswing with solar flux and sunspots now way up.
Briefly heard W1XX busily handing out RI mult on 20m to Eu stns I couldn’t really copy, when he gets called by a YB stn! …again, no copy here!! Figured you satisfied the masses with our mult John.
Up next — Russian DX Contest in 2 weeks with M-Op plans at W1AN. Additional ops welcome!
