Yemen DxPedition 7O6T

Socotra Island (IOTA AF-028; CQ Zone 37), Yemen 7O6T

The Yemen DxPedition has been underway for several days. This is a rare DXCC country near the top of the most wanted list. I think it’s number 6. We worked them on two bands as K1T during the NEQP and last night they were loud on both 160M and 80M. Unfortunately they were not copying anybody well so I could not add those bands to my log. Maybe tonite?

It may be a long time before Yemen is active again considering the turmoil there. They are easy copy on both 20M and 15M, so see what you can do.

  1. Conditions on 80 were good tonight around 0000 GMT with 7O6T working East Coast. He was a true 569. But last night I could barely hear him. So give it shot. As John says, this may be the last time for a long time for this “entity”. Also give the 6O a try. He has been very active.

  2. I just picked up 7O6T on 80CW at 0152Z. Just sent my call twice and got him. Amazing!

Now 160M….? Not so easy. Sitting in NYC traffic Friday night at SS: definitely no copy. Saturday night: too much noise and zero copy. Sunday: One more night to try?.. Got him! 160M in the log.

  3. Just worked 7O6T for 2nd and 3rd bands on 20m CW, then 15m CW within 40 mins, at 0025Z then 0105Z…very little wait w/ gud sigs using my Hexbeam and 100w. Snagged 6O0CW on 30m CW in between while he was QSX for USA @ 0052Z.

7O6T is a *MAJOR* DX-ped (120k QSOs so far, but only 25k with North America) but ends May 15…just a **few days left**!! My 1st Q with them was only 2 days in…lucky I guess because I could not break through the EU wall afterwards ’til just now. Good luck, be patient and have fun!

  4. Congrats John!
Heard it was the last day and found him on 17M SSB, called and called but unlike the other ops who move the listening frequency around so they can hear, this guy sits on one frequency AND chastised a NP4 station for being off frequency (a trick to be heard) so he piles all the little signals on one frequency, and then spends a LOT of time calling CQ as he can’t make anything out. I finally gave up and started to go to the hardware store so I could get on 2M (don’t ask!) for a Yale net later and forgot my phone. I went back up – checked one more time and heard him calling NA (finally – 4:30pm) – I call, I hear NA, I call (repeat process many times) and finally he comes back with N6E? and I repeat and he gets my call. So I should be in the log on 17 but unlike some of the other ops, this guy was horrible – didn’t do any of the things they said should be done in DX University :). Basically he could only hear loud stations until he called NA and still I had to get lucky for him to hear me over others calling. since we were all on top of each other.
3 bands – this one was my 20 meter dipole vertical with one end 80′ up in the tree, tuned on 17M.
