WPX RTTY Prep at W1AN

While putting together a team to defend our WPX RTTY  NA title (and record) at W1AN, I received an excellent suggestion from Jim, KS1J that we provide one last opportunity to anyone interested in practicing with N1MM/RTTY and (re-)familiarizing themselves with John’s station. To that end, I asked John if he would be willing to open his station this weekend during the BARTG RTTY Sprint, which runs from 1200 UTC Saturday to 1200 UTC Sunday. John has graciously agreed to do that.

If you haven’t operated the BARTG contests, they’re a lot of fun and usually have a great deal of activity. The Sprint does have a Multi category but we are more concerned with folks coming down and getting comfortable with the operation rather than “contesting” per se. Of course, you can always just drop in and chat for a while, too. I’ll bring doughnuts, and John always has plenty of coffee.

I’d appreciate it if those interested in putting in some time at John’s station would let me know either here or via email when they plan on being here so John and I can plan our time. I intend on being there early (0700 local perhaps) to help John with whatever needs to be done in preparation for WPX RTTY, but doubt that I can spend the entire day there.

15 days to go!

  1. Pat & W1AN Gang – Give us an update here when you can on how the BARTG RTTY Sprint went, and the crew’s final preps/plans for the “local” effort from W1AN in 2013 CQWW WPX RTTY. Good luck to the team…now under 2 weeks ’til “GO!” time! Bill W1WBB

  2. Ed, John, and I met yesterday, mostly to chew the fat – and donuts and cookies and Nancy’s excellent cooking – but we also discussed ham-related issues. Specifically with regard to WPX RTTY we took a look at N1MM and made some changes that impact how ESM will work (for the better), shortened the messages, etc. Next Sunday we will be meeting to go over the hardware and make sure we understand how things are now that the stack match is in place.

We didn’t operate the BARTG RTTY Sprint. We hoped that some members might show up who needed a little practice but it wasn’t in the cards. Anyone interested in operating during WPX RTTY and needs a refresher or familiarization is welcome to come next Sunday, time TBD.

  3. Sorry I missed it – made my plane reservations long before I found out about this but as I said, will be there for the contest and any op times ahead of time to prepare – might I suggest as a practice test (only one I know between now and then):

1800 Sat to 1800 Sunday – would be a chance to get ops up to speed. Only odd bit is that it’s a single op only contest so either we operate multi and don’t submit a log or each op uses a different call… SO2R is allowed so both radios could be used…

  4. Great update Pat. Thanks indeed to John W1AN for hosting club mbrs for the upcoming WPX RTTY.

  5. It seems that the weather Sunday may not be conducive for some of us to drive to John’s station. Can we or do we want to move the hardware checkout to Saturday? I know this may disrupt folks’ plans but I see no other choice as the contest is next weekend, unless some of us want to do it during the week.

Doing it Saturday at least provides the opportunity, for those who want it, to get familiarized with John’s station and ask questions or practice operating. That is preferable to doing it during the contest.

    Opinions?

  6. I can do it during the week – I don’t think Saturday works for John, W1AN but I can do it any day – just let me know when to show up!

  7. I think we have things pretty squared away for Friday – we need to decide a schedule so the part timers are not all at W1AN at the same time. I’ll finish networking a 3rd computer into N1MM when I get there Friday so we’ll have a hot-swap in case of a computer failure.

  8. While the local WX services are not saying anything much about this weekend the mid-range models are predicting two west coast storms will affect us with snow depths of 3-5 inches for one unnamed model and 12 plus inches for the European Model (that called Sandy right).

This makes a schedule even more important as we need to figure coverage that doesn’t require multiple trips per operator as that may prove impractical.

I have blocked off the entire contest but can’t operate that long without sleep.
