Sure hope that lots of members stayed at home this weekend and made some contacts in this contest. Between snow relocation projects, I have managed to put in a couple of hours.

Had fun. Spent most of the week cleaning up the shack in preparation. I used the contest as an excuse to do so. No late nights for me. I just can’t put in the hours I’d like. Conditions were surprisingly good on 10M. I was hoping to add to the QSO total more on 20M but activity wasn’t as it should be. Was the total affected by not having a rare prefix? I can’t say for sure, since I didn’t seem to work many W1, W2. etc. I did work NG1G. I thought Pat was back! I later discovered the call was on loan to K1SD who put it to good use.
Now time to get ready for the CW test! …and more snow.

Comments:
Wow. What a fun test.
The week before the contest, I had been thinking about operating at John
W1AN’s station in CT as part of a M/2 effort. But, another New England
blizzard was forecast for the weekend, so I decided to operate from home and
keeping the XYL happy (We went to NP3U for 2013 WPX RTTY and New England got
clobbered!). I was still undecided how much effort to put into the contest. I
didn’t want to be just another K1, so at the last minute I asked good friend
and fellow CT RI Contest Group member Pat if I could borrow NG1G. “By all
means” he said. I thought that could spice things up and it gave me an
incentive to put in a more significant effort.
I started the contest on 40 meters running on VFO A and later started
S&Ping on the K3s 2nd VFO (SO2V). Using the K3’s SUB RX for S&P
while CQing is not nearly as ideal as a 2nd radio (SO2R), but it does produce
good results and helps keep you occupied during slow periods. I’m not at all
proficient at it, but used it during the entire test and it was fun and fairly
productive. For all of Friday night I stayed put on 40 meters and stayed put
in the chair. For the next 6.5 hours I didn’t move; a personal record for
me. When I finally got out the chair at 0630Z (0130 local) I actually had some
trouble walking!
I got a bit of a late start on Saturday morning. Started on 10 meters at 1400Z
and ran there until about 1900. After a break, I moved between 10 (with a great
run of JAs around 2230) and 15 until 0040Z when I moved back to 40 and stayed
there until 0230Z. Went to 80 till 0430. 80 meters just wasn’t very
productive (79 total QSOs), so went back to 40 till 0540.
I got an earlier start on Sunday. I had been neglecting 20 meters until now
because 10 and 15 had been so good for me. I opened up on 20 at 1130Z and ran
and S&Ped on the 2nd VFO for the next 3 hours. Whilst running Europe on 20
I had a great surprise when BA7QT called in at 1240Z. I had to ask for a repeat
on the call several times because I was sure it was a DA7. I was finally
convinced and was then immediately rewarded with YB0MWM to boot. Soon
thereafter I worked the 4H1T on the 2nd VFO. Spent about 4 hours back on 10,
then back to 20 for another 3 hours (with HS1NIV for another rare, for me, deep
Asia QSO/mult, calling in at 2018Z), then to 40 for an hour till 2347. I went
to 15 for the last few Qs of the contest; JG3FEA made it into the log at
23:59:48 for a new multiplier!
Some asides:
I really loved getting S/N 002 at 2320Z Sunday night and then 035 from another
at 2358Z! That’s what I’m talking about!
I was running on 10 meters Sunday afternoon with the Skyhawk pointed EU and the
A4S due west when M0PNN reports “Biggest signal on the band.” That felt
good.
N1MM+ worked fine. MMTTY was useless on 40 meters Friday night and marginal at
best, on Saturday and Sunday. 2Tone was solid; normal decode and flutter were
great; one or both windows usually pulled it out.
This was one of the best results for me in a long time and the best performance
from this station. Everything worked as it was supposed to.
Thanks to everyone for the Qs and the many requested repeats. And a special
thanks to Pat for the loan of NG1G.

Bencher Skyhawk @ 70’; Cuchcraft A4S @ 42’; WX0B StackMatch; Inverted Vs on
40 and 80 meters.
N1MM+ ver 1.0.4678.0 (I wasn’t about to install the upgrade during the
contest)
Here is the result of my meager 6 hour effort. Only club station I recall working was NG1G early on, probably on 40. At the time I was wondering if the signal was originating from Pat’s or W1AN’s or somewhere else. Now we know. Astounding effort, James. Super score.
Congrats,James….wicked good score! 73! — John, W1XX
