2012 NEQP Results

Since I was delinquent in posting this repository for the NEQP Results and others have already posted results in another posting, please post results in the NEQP and Special Event posting below.

I guess this falls into the category of being “overtaken by events.”

I had a busy week, a sore back and shoulder from working on my tractors and a bad sinus headache from mowing on Saturday morning so Dans last minute arrival was welcome. The station was ready for either an SO or an M/S so we ended up doing an M/S. All of the running was done by Dan during the first stretch Saturday while I spent some time searching for mults. We switched back and forth between my CW runs and Dans SSB runs Sunday while the mult station picked up a few new ones. I have to say I enjoyed the contest especially since it’s good practice handling the CW with multiple stations calling at the same time. Its been a several week break since the last CW test so it helps.

Worked maybe 8 or 10 fellow CTRI 1X1s. I’m guessing many CTRIers were working S&P. So we didn’t see them spotted. Congratulations to W1XX and K1XA on the 245K score from W1M!

  2. Hi,

Some people are looking for to work the 10 1×1 stations for the certificate commemorating the club’s 20th anniversary (as an ARRL club) so whether you got on the contest for a lot of hours this past weekend or not be sure to get on the air with your call and SPOT yourself as soon as you get on as CTRICG special event, so those looking for contacts can find you. I had a station from Canada tell me I was his 5th (running K1T with W1AN). We want to commemorate this so we need to get on the air (I’ll pick up a call and work this week from home).

It would be great to have the club’s name on people’s wall 🙂

  3. I had kind of a slow start, but things got getter Saturday night and Sunday. I worked W1A, W1M, K1B (3 bands), K1T, N1Q, and W1R. I put in about 14.5 hours, which was a few more than last year. I had more Qs than I had last year, but my score was lower than last year. Maybe I did some CW last year, which would explain it I guess. 40 and 20 were my best bands. Although I occasionally checked out 10, I didn’t hear much. I need a 10m antenna. Hopefully I’ll have one up by the fall.

I missed Bristol County in RI, Windham County in CT, Franklin and Hampsire Counties in MA, and Coos County in NH. I ended up with 16 out of 21 in Maine and only 6 out of 14 in VT.
I also missed ND, SD, DE, MS, OK, AK, and HI in the states and 7 of the 14 Canadian provinces. Only 12 DX countries.

Today I received the first QSL card for a 1×1 call sign from the contest. That didn’t take long. Do we have any design ideas for the QSL card or certificate yet?

**1x1 S/E call to celebrate CTRI Contest Group 20 Year Anniversary**
                   K1B QSL info -- via NG1G *only*.

Operated as Multi-Op Single Tx using spotting cluster…and just 100 watts!
    Great fun using the S/E 1×1 c/s.

Worked 43 states/7 VE provinces and 26 DX mults. 46 New Engl counties found.
    QSO breakdown: 415-CW; 135-SSB. New mults: 61-CW; 15-SSB.

Brand new S4+ nearby power line noise created havoc on weak signals. Noise
blanker not fully effective so apologies to those I could not pull out.

Limited op-time each day with numerous interuptions. Busy Saturday S&Ping the
7QP/INQP/ARI stns mixed with running. Decent condx but not as good as
expected/predicted. Activity seemed less this year…many chasing 7O6T and
    other DX??

Thanks to all who called in. QSOs will be uploaded to LoTW.

    Comments:
Couldn’t put in the same effort as last year due to immense number of other
things to do this weekend. But did have some time on Sunday afternoon. Not
much in the way of DX this time. Lots of QSB but bands were relatively QRN
free. Stuck to CW so I could push buttons and take it easy. Had fun.
    Heard/worked W1B, K1G,K1K, K1W, K1B. Not sure if the 1X1 actually helped
generate any Q’s since my rate was about the same as last year.

I did post the log to LOTW and was surprised at the QSL count. I haven’t added it up but my guess is a good 50% to 60% of my LOTW QSO’s have been confirmed already.

I would guess that even though guys have confirmed via LOTW, they might be looking for a special event card as well.

Is anyone planning any effort (major or minor) for the WPX contest at the end of the month?

  7. Based on the CTRI 1 x 1 NEQP activity last weekend, I think that certificate hunters are going to be hard pressed to come up with 10 CTRI 1 x 1’s. We comandeered what was it 26 1 x 1s? But they can’t work us if they can’t find us. I know that modest stations in the club generally operate S & P as in the NEQP, but that won’t cut it for those looking for the certificate. They can’t find you. Based on the what looks like the club activity in the NEQP…certificates ain’t going to happen. Now maybe nobody really cares to get a certificate. I dunno. But we advertised its availability so I guess we have an obligation to try to make it a possibility. Whiskey One M E X I C O was very workable in the NEQP as you know. I have not used the call anywhere else. I wasn’t planning to…but may give it a whirl this weekend and see what happens. So we have about 6 days and one weekend left. If your 1 x 1 call has so far been scarce, how about getting on the air. And CALL CQ!!!!!!!! — de Whiskey One M E X I C O !!!

  8. I don’t know how many 1x1s we put on the air during NEQP but I worked 13 of them, which means we had at least 14 on the air. As you say, that’s far short of the 26 we received. Once all the scores are reported then we’ll know for sure. I worked my CW contacts S&P but worked many SSB and most RTTY contacts by calling CQ. Once I take my last final exam on Thursday I plan on operating in real “special event” fashion through the 15th.

I agree, John – all of our members who acquired a 1×1 call sign should be getting on the air, calling CQ, and making contacts! That was the intent, right?

    Pat, NG1G/K1W

  9. I’ve also got a request for a QSL today. I think we should wait a while and see what kind of demand there is and if only a little I’ll put something together as a jpg and could make photo cards at about $.15 cents each from an online photo service. We may be able to trim to the 3.5 X 5.5 format with my paper cutter and run the back thru a printer. I don’t think we should rush. We can discuss at the next mmeting. It looks like certificate demand will be nil.
    John, W1AN

  10. I keep getting cards every day. Not a lot, 4, maybe 5 per day, but they’ll add up quickly at that rate. I would like to share part of a very nice letter (that’s right, one card came with a typed letter) I received yesterday, from Will, K4YQ. Will says “I was particularly glad to make contact with a Rhode Island station. I am very close to completing my ARRL WAS80 requirements. I’ve been working on it for a long while and have been trying to make contact with a Rhode Island station to complete my requirements for months without success, until now.”

Will’s 80M QSO was with our illustrious W1M, aka John, W1XX. Way to go, John!

The reason I’m posting this is to make the point that we need as many members as possible to get on the air and make QSOs. There are plenty of hams out there like Will who will appreciate our doing so. But, in order for this effort to work as it should, we need to maximize our participation. One or two stations on the air won’t cut it – so everyone please, OPERATE!!!

  11. Hi all,

Here are my K1G NEQP results. Hardware problems and a serious lack of motivation to stay in the chair kept the numbers down. Hope everyone who played had fun.

  12. Good Morning all…
    Sorry for the late report.
Radio Ansonia could only put a Sunday afternoon effort due to 36th wedding anniversary plans. I was called by a V73 on 15m for my best DX of the day.

It’s working pretty good. Believe it or not both of the “tails” have broken off so I have to use a tuner for now. Even with the tuner it gets out great.

When I get some time I’ll see ehy they failed and replace them.

Current project is revamping my VHF tower with a hazer. Dan and I have it 1/2 way done. I want to start doing some vhf/uhf contesting.

  14. Dave’s tower is all the way done now (at least it’s perpendicular to the ground now!) I didn’t get any antennas shot over the weekend working on his tower – hopefully the rain is not as bad as they predict so I can shoot some more lines! Worked little by little a few more W1J stations and will see what else I can work today.
