NP3U 2013

Ok guys I haven’t heard from 1 person yet about flight information.  Jay and I have been checking flights everyday since the meeting.  Prices are ranging from $280-$450.  Really the best bang for your buck is JetBlue out of Boston.  Even though the cost is a little more ($370 pp/taxes) you fly in comfort, first checked bag is FREE, you are allowed a carry-on and a personal item (back pack), and everyone flies in “first class”.  All seats have their own “free” tv to watch, and non-stop flights to and from.  This is the flight we are looking at right now:

  1. G’morning, Bill:

It is unclear, to me at least, exactly what you want to hear from us. Do you want to know if we think it is OK? Are you going to be our travel agent and order all the tickets with us paying you our share? or what???

I did take a look around earlier in the week and didn’t see anything any better than what you had posted, so I didn’t feel the need to post anything else. I haven’t duplicated your search, but the Jet Blue is OK with me, however, I just hope I can stay awake until I get home. 🙂

For reference, I searched back in my computer check book and found that I sent a check to John, W1AN, for $289.29 on 12/23/2008 for our Feb 2009 WPX trip.

  2. I think that is an OK price for non-stop. Especially first bag free. Assume each bag can weigh 50lbs? Check travelocity. American Ailines has several choices from BOS for $267 round trip with one stop including fees. Add $25 for first bag and $35 for the second. They may also charge up to $10.99 fee using their service. Total $300 to compare with Jet Blue with one bag.

Bill N1HRA, did you get my email of 11/11?

Who will book? Who will commit to going on this first flight? Whoever does will need funds asap to cover the Credit Card charges.
    John

  3. Bill,

I missed your 11:00 deadline. My wife is back in the hospital (Friday evening we did the ER/admit for observations)
I will not be flying from New England. I will be near Tampa, FL, so I don’t need to get tickets from Boston. I will get my own flights – Jet Blue has the best prices/times/one free bag from Tampa, so I will make arrangements to arrive before you all get to San Juan, and depart after you all leave on the homeward trip. If you use the flights listed above, I can do that, and it will be better for my sister-in-law and wife to get me to and from the airport.
If you have any questions, please ask.

    73, Mike, K1DM

  4. I will be committing to the JetBlue flight. I will be purchasing my ticket within the next few days. I believe Bill will be booking the same flight as mine. JetBlue is nice because of the comfy chairs, and seats that are wider than normal. I did check with Travelocity, Hotwire, and Orbitz. The prices are the same through the airline as the sites. The airline does make it easier to choose your flight times though. The prices do change though everyday. Sometimes they go up, sometimes down. If its cheaper today, I will purchase my ticket today, or whenever Bill has his money.

JetBlue- the over weight bag fee is $50. To check a second bag is $40. Other airlines are $25-$35 to check the first bag, then an additional $35-45 for second bag. I’m not sure of the overweight bag fee with other airline, however it can cost upwards of $70 for a single overweight bag. JetBlue sounds like the best bang for your buck.

  6. I just went to the Jet Blue web site to order tickets and discovered that for a mere additional $35, there is flight leaving SJU for BOS at 2:10PM arriving in Boston at 5:30PM. Actually, the price comes out to $371.40. I would much prefer that flight. Anyone else interested in doing that?null

  7. As far as I know, no one has booked yet. The only confirmation I have gotten was from Jay, Ken and John. We need to ALL come together on a time to buy these tickets. The SOONER the BETTER. Jay and I would like to purchase our tickets as soon as possible. The flight Ken has posted sounds ok to myself and Jay.

    Thanks
    Bill N1HRA

  8. John had mentioned on an above posting about someone being the purchaser of the tickets. I think this is a good idea to have 1 person buy all the tickets. Reason being, if there are only 2 tickets left on a particular flight, and people start buying their own tickets, someone or some people will be on a different flight. Which in turn may cost more, and/or your arrival/departure time may be different. That being said, if people want to send me a check or come give me the money for your ticket, I will make the purchase all at once. This way we are all on the same flight. There’s no price guaranty that the price will stay the way it is, so please figure this into your calculation and PLEASE call me, text me, email me and let me know that you’re going, and that you’ll be sending a check. Once I book the flights whoever did not purchase a ticket, will have to try to make sure that their arrival time in PR will be as close to ours as possible. No one wants to sit in an airport for hours waiting. Again, please figure in a little more for your tickets. Proper change will be given back to you after the tickets are booked. I’m looking to do this as soon as possible. That’s why I need everyone who is going to contact me ASAP. After we do this, we will notify Mike and let him know our arrival time, so he can plan accordingly.

  9. Hi All,

I am still working out my schedule and will likely fly from Burlington as I live 10 miles from the airport and have miles on United that I’ll use for my tix. I may not be able to go down on the Tuesday before (I am targeting Thursday) and will likely need to leave the following Monday. I have a lot of travel scheduled for early 2013. Hopefully my travel schedule won’t be troubling… I’ll catch up with Carlos to make sure that will be OK for him to come get me, unless we’ll have a car. I’ll know more about my schedule in December.

    73,

    – Matt, WE1H

  10. Bill:
Thanks for volunteering to do this. Do you have a PayPal account that we can transfer money to, or is the US mail timely enough for you???

One other thing… Every one should make sure that Bill has the name you want on your ticket, which must be exactly the same name as appears on the picture ID that you present when you check in.

For me, Bill, please use Kenneth E. Wagner.

Also, my vote is for the itinerary that I posted earlier.

    Thanks

  11. Ken,
If Bill doesn’t have Paypal, i do. I will be paying Bill out of the account that it’s linked to. If you want to do that route, that’s ok with me. Wac751@nullgmail.com is the email address it’s linked to.

  12. OK to book me on the flights Ken proposed. John M. Spigel on the ticket with CT Drivers License ID. DOB May 10, 1948. That explains the hair loss. Don’t forget the birthday gifts.

    73,
    John W1AN

  13. hehehehe… yeh, I’ll have my 73rd birthday while we are down there. My DOB Feb 10, 1940.

  14. Ken, got your email. I’ll let Bill know. If you want to email me your ticket info, we will book as soon as we have all monies. I looked again today at the flight you proposed. Ticket amount is still the same. And with John saying ok to that flight as well, Bill and i are good with it too.

  16. For whomever is watching the price for the flight Ken proposes, it just dropped today to $336.40. If you are willing to arrive home later it’s $301 something. Pretty good deal.

  17. John, this is the flight as of right now that we are going to book. As soon as you can get me either the cash or a check for this flight, Jay and I are going to book it. We have so far, Jay’s, Ken’s and mine ready to go. This is the cheapest we have found to arrive home at an early time. The price is slightly lower to arrive at 10 PM, but we are looking to come home on this flight you posted. Please get back to me, and if possible, we can do this either today or tomorrow.
    Thank
    Bill N1HRA

  18. Price went to $301.40 tonite at 0000Z. Bill, I can stop over with the check Monday. Anyone else besides Jay, Bill, Ken and me on this one? Let Bill know.
    73,
    John W1AN

  19. FLIGHTS ARE BOOKED! $318.90 was the price per person for each ticket. Departing BOS at 1310 on Feb 5, Arriving SJU at 1805. Flight home: Departing SJU at 1405 Feb 12, Arriving BOS at 1729. All others who are traveling on their own, please plan accordingly.
Ken K3IU, you will be receiving back $71 from the money you transferred to Jay.
    Thanks
    Bill N1HRA

  20. Bill,

Thanks for managing the tickets. After I got your comment, I went ahead and booked my JET BLUE flights from/to Tampa. I arrive @ SJU on Tuesday, Feb 5, afternoon at 1706 and depart from SJU Feb 12 at 1706, so, I will get there about one hour ahead of the Boston Flight and will depart about 30 minutes before you guys land in Boston. These times will make it much easier for my wife and sister-in-law to manage the airport trips.

Sounds like we’re making motion toward the adventure!

Ken, how do we want to work the rental vehicle? I like the idea of an SUV or Van.

    73, Mike, K1DM

  21. I was actually the mastermind behind this operation. After some quirks at the very end with the overall purchasing of the tickets, and lots of laughs later, they were finally purchased. Bill, Ken, John and myself are all on the same flights, and in the same area. I am very looking forward to this, and cannot wait to see what this is all about. From what I’ve seen, and stories that have been told, I am very anxiously awaiting this trip.
Thank you all for letting me be apart of this.

  22. Bill and Jay:
Thanks for your efforts! I got the email notification from Jet Blue this morning. If you want to PayPal send to my call sign @ arrl.net. Or you can send me a check by snail mail.

    Mike:
I have not investigated anything about rental car/van/SUV yet. Also, I had no response for a recommendation from Carlos.

    73, Ken K3IU

  23. Bill/Jay:
I just printed out my eTicket Receipt from the link in the email I got from JetBlue and it says the fare is $336.40. Please check before you send me the balance of my transfer to Jay.
    Thanks…
    Ken K3IU

  24. Priceline.com 11/12/2012: Van/SUV @SJU. Per Week rental:
    SUV Mini-Van
    On Airport
    Budget 470 470
    Avis 478 478

    Shuttle
    Alamo 432 488
    National 443 493

    73 / James / K1SD

  25. Jim,
Thanks for looking up info on rentals. It looks like the Alamo is the least expensive from this vantage point. We need to discuss this a bit more before I put money on-line. I do think to be good guests, helping out with transport is important. Also, with Matt’s potentially complex travel schedule, it would help if one of us could pick him up/deliver him at/to the airport so Carlos can be concentrating on “more important” issues.

    Mike, K1DM

  26. For the number of people we will have down there, I think that the real question is *not* whether we should, but what “size” vehicle to rent. We might be OK with just a full size sedan at considerably less cost. I also think we should all agree to split the cost amongst us. I am willing to do that. Also, someone should bring along their handy-dandy GPS to use… otherwise we might not be able to get from point A to point B. I have one I could bring.

    Ken K3IU

  27. Plenty of time to decide on a rental. I think a sedan will do. Carlos I’m sure will take the groceries in his pickup and lead us up the hill. Enterprise has a full size sedan for $253. 2/5-2/10.
    John W1AN.

  28. Just looked at car rentals with Jay on hotwire.com
Full size sedan (5 people) $239.09 for the week. Also, Jay has a GPS he carries with him all the time he is willing to let us use. Just throwing that out there.
