Just put in a bit of time at the end as I’d heard a few others from RI would be quite active. Sure enough, within my 1st 5 QSOs I was called twice by RI — K1VSJ and W1OP. Thanks to CTRI Big Gun John W1XX for also calling in!

Did work my last state needed for 40m WAS — ND.

Chris KA1GEU — how’d the new beam work?? Expect you cranked the tower *down* for this NA event!

  2. First sweepstake in many many years. So nice to be back on the radio. I can honestly say this was my best effort during sweepstakes ever. My goal was 1000 Q’s and of course the sweep. I came short on the 1000 Q’s but got the sweep. It seems over the years NT was always the culprit. NLI evaded me and was the last section I needed for the sweep. Finally worked him on 40 M this morning. Worked many club members and people that I haven’t heard in many years. All welcoming me back into ham radio. Needless to say, I had a blast.

  3. Great effort, Bill. Ya gotta love the broom!

Were you HP or LP? Did you multi-op with Jay or Single op?

I didn’t join in the contest, but yesterday afternoon, I heard 2 NT stations on 15 and 10 meters and both were S9+ with my beam to the SW.

Not as good as I was hoping for, but not as bad as it could have been. I missed last year’s SS, and couldn’t quite beat the score I had 2 years ago. I couldn’t seem to get many good runs in. This was mostly S&P. I never heard MB, but snagged the rest of them. It sounded like there was only 1 or 2 ops from WV. When I came across one of them I spent about 10 minutes in the pileup to get him. I think RI was well represented. I worked N1HRA, W1AN, KI1G, W1XX and probably others from the club.
The antenna worked well. Other than WV, when I called someone they always came back to me within 1 or 2 calls. What a difference from working with 2 dipoles and a tuner!

Hi Gang, good to work Chris KA1GEU, Bill N1HRA, and Rick KI1G in this one. Looks like Chris is enjoying his new antenna and tower and welcome back Bill!

I was surprised at how good conditions were Saturday, especially the lack of noise. All bands were good and it was nice to see that even weak stations could be worked. For an SSB contest this was pretty easy on the ears. There were only two stations I could not pull out of the mud the entire weekend.

My approach to SS is to work most of the tough sections first S&P, and then get some Q rates going. It’s clearly not the best approach for a high score but I take more pride in getting the clean sweep. As I wasn’t sure how much time I would be able to put in, I guess the strategy worked. Saturday I was near. The check boxes remained empty for ELI and ONE until startup near 1430Z Sunday. This was my earliest ever to get it done. I hope the score robot agrees!

N1MM performed well. The recent changes to allow all info to be entered in the exchange field was a great innovation. Thanks for the heads up on this, Ken!

Even with limited hours in the chair, this was was really fun! I’m looking forward to the upcoming CW test next week. Anyone want to run a multi at W1DX?

First many TNX to Pat, NG1G, and Chris, KA1GEU, and Wifey Carolyn who helped Saturday morning to strong-arm the 80 Meter vertical back up using the 2 crank method. The antenna had been up for about 7 years but was a casualty of Hurricane Sandy. It was doing fine, until a big tree branch landed on one of the guy ropes and topped it. Took several days to repair prior to going back up. Of course, the 160 also took a hit knocking off the top 20 feet and top loading. Am now working on getting it back operational with some linear loading and inductance at the base. A better fix will have to wait til spring and a CTRI meeting (hi!).

With the antenna work in progress did not put in the usual full effort on SS. But did get the clean sweep….and yes it was also WVA to be the last one….surprising. A VE8 called my on 15 meters for NT.

Expect to now be back to normal contest, DX, and club activity…

WOW…saw Chris’s new tower installation Saturday. Impressive. Thata go, Chris!

I was making a few 80m QSOs late Sat nite when K3KU asks if I know K3IU. Yes, I do. “Tell him HI, we used to be neighbors.” So Ken: HI from K3KU!
Heard a few comments that there seemed to be more RI stations on than usual.
WV and MB were my last 2 for the sweep.
40m was surprisingly fruitful for me. On 80m, RF was getting into the computer locking transmit if just a little too much drive. My 80m resonance band on the HF2V vert is very narrow to non-existent, further causing problems.
    Still had fun.

  8. Gang,

It looks like you all had a blast. My wife spent the weekend in the hospital. She’s home now, and we’re driving to DE for Thanksgiving! Another medication adjustment, and she’s good as new again. So, we’re looking for more NORMAL.
I hope to get on for the CQWWCW this coming weekend from the home QTH. I will have to do some antenna work on Friday afternoon. It should be fun giving the new KPA500 a work out!
Congrats to all on the sweeps – I still have never completed that feat!

    Mike, K1DM

  9. I’m sorry, but my friend Art, the K3KU I know, would NEVER work in a phone contest. Well, I guess we did once from my house in MD, but at the next meeting of PVRC, we entered carrying a banner that said “Phone Sucks!” 🙂
    Thanks…
    Ken K3IU

  10. Mike, Glad to hear your wife is better.
If you need help of any kind with the antenna work, let me know. I’m free all Fri.

  11. Congrats to all those who worked the phone SS. It sure looks like everyone had a lot of fun. I heard Bill, N1HRA, doing a great run on 80 meters. Great to hear you on the air again!! Now for the CQWW CW this coming weekend. I may only have limited time but conditions seem to be peaking. Maybe I’ll try a single band effort.

    Congrats again!

    Jim KS1J

  12. Jay was here off and on through the weekend. I have to admit, I let him make a few contacts S&P, but 99.9% was me. I guess that makes me a multi-op, but I put single-op high power.

    Bill N1HRA

  13. Sounds like alot of folks had some fun with this one. Nice to hear lots of CTRI activity.

    I ended up with 500 Q’s and a sweep for 83,000 points. MS was # 82 and WV was # 83.

    73,
    Rick KI1G
