2014 ARRL January VHF/UHF Contest Results

Please post your scores here by adding a comment to this posting. I have been messing around but on six meters the conditions are not too great.

  1. My logger (N1MM) says I was “On” for 4h+00m, but it seemed like it was longer than that. I was only on 6 meters and conditions were pretty dismal. I managed to get into MD, KY, IL, WI and MI but for the most part, they were pretty much ESP levels. I did work several club members, though: W1XX, KA1VMG, W1CTN, and K1DM who called me late Sunday afternoon. Spent most of the time CQing with occasional swings up and down the band looking for someone I had not worked. Was using the K3 + KPA500 amp and 5 elements at about 35 feet.

    Comments:

It was nice to be back on 432 and 220 after several years absence. This contest, having 1296 was a new experience for me and I was quite surprised at how well 10W can do on the band. No openings or enhancements on any band to note, and the only CTRIer worked was W1XX.

I worked 9 grids including FN10 and FN43 on 1296 with my new loop yagi on the tall tower.
There are some great operators on the VHF and UHF bands where patience and perseverance are required skills. This is much like 160M where you need to hear the signals near or under the ambient noise levels along with getting your antennas directed properly. Lots of challenge and great fun and satisfaction results when all works.

I tried to run a solid state 170W amp loaned by K1DM but it was too great a load on my power supply so I kept barefoot on 2M. But, arriving Saturday in trade for an HF yagi was another AM6155. I hope to get that working for 144 for the next contest.

    100W on 50MHz and 144MHz, at 75′ and 72′
    300W on 432 and 220MHz, at 115′ and 117′
10W on 1296 with 24 element loop yagi at 114′

A big thanks to the tower crew, Mike K1DM and Ken, K3IU who helped with VHF installs.

Hope to see you in the June contest!
