Field Day

Thanks to all for a great Field Day and especially to John, W1XX for getting this off the ground and coordinating it all, Ed W1PN for arranging the site, John W1AN for all the gear, Mike for the all the work in the commissary and to all the other participating club members. Personally I had a great time and I believe all will agree that we achieved the primary goal which was to work together on this project and have fun.

Again thanks to all. (Sorry if I missed anyone !!)

  1. My wife and I and my friend Steve aa1pq had a good time visiting your field day location. I posted some pictures I took on my Facebook page if you belong to face book.

  2. This could be a reason that conditions didn’t seem to be in our favor for Field Day (from QRZ.com):

Solar Storms Continue, as Power Grid Braces Itself
A third solar storm flared up Thursday, and power-grid operators are again bracing themselves for a potentially damaging geomagnetic storm, according to NOAA.The moderate storm conditions are expected to arrive on Earth Saturday and continue until Sunday, said the agency’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
It’s the third flare from the sun that has power companies and grid operators bracing for the potentially disrupting space energy.
The first hit on Monday, and the second on Wednesday. Those storms were graded “severe,” but ultimately proved to have minimal effects on the interconnectivity of the electric system.
Worst-case scenarios have been feared with such solar activity, since a geomagnetic storm knocked out power for million along the U.S. – Canadian border in March 1989, through surges lasting just over 90 seconds.
Such interstellar power threats are not new. Telegraph networks were knocked out by similar surges in 1859 and 1921, according to historical accounts.

  3. Here is the summary of QSO activity for FD. I still have piles of stuff on the floor in my shack to sort thru but thought I would quickly post the initial results.

  4. A BIG “Thank You” to John, W1XX, for leading the charge and organizing the club’s Field Day event. An equal “Thank You” to the Commissary Captain, Mike, KB1RFJ, arguably the most important function of the event! I have tried to list all of the participants below, but undoubtedly, I am missing someone, so my apologies in advance, and here goes…

  5. UNSUNG HEROES By W1XX

Our Field Day Captains played a large role in our success: W1AN, W1PN, KB1RFJ, KW2G, K1DM. They are worthy of acclaim for our “team” effort. But there were many “unsung heroes” who rose to the fore. They include:
James, K1SD, who copied the W1AW Field Day message Friday night for bonus points, and helped W1AN package radio gear for transport. Ken, K3IU, who mentored ops unfamiliar with N1MM. Our super ops KI1G and KS1J who kept the QSO rate up during poor conditions. Priceless were Jim’s comments to the “please copy” crowd at the other end of the QSO. Pat, NG1G, who kicked off the first hour on SSB. Bob, KB1LN, who did yeoman antenna setup work only to return Sunday to help take down the monster antenna — thus saving a return trip. To all who pitched in Sunday for the take-down — avoiding past comments of “getting stuck” with all the work post operation. “Joan” who assisted our Commissary Chief to feed a bunch of hungry ops exquisite cuisine. And our esteemed Section Manager Bob, W1YRC, who was there to receive the Field Day message on 2 meter FM. Apologies to any other unsung heroes that I failed to mention.
Please bring your “hotwash” comments/ideas to the next club meeting, July 11, in case we decide to punish ourselves again next year. 73! — John, W1XX

  6. For next Saturday’s meeting, can James (K1SD) & John (W1AN) PLEASE bring in their $5 pledge for the raffle.

    Thx Mike
