YCCC Sweepstakes Tips – a Gift from PVRC

Anyone planning to play in ARRL Sweepstakes this weekend may find this helpful or, at least, somewhat interesting.

YCCC does not usually put forth an all-out effort in the Sweepstakes contests, as the Northeast is typically geo-challenged in this domestic contest. So we let our friends to the west have at it, and we are happy to participate and have fun.

Other contest clubs take Sweepstakes much more seriously! I happened to be doing a bit of web ‘recon’ and came across a gem on the PVRC website, a strategic encouragement for their members to participate in Sweepstakes. It includes a lot of specific operating tips which may (or might not) be applicable to those of us joining the fray this weekend.

So I’ll share the link:

  1. Gang: This is chock full of good Sweepstakes info…we could take a lesson from the club enthusiasm shown here. Give SS a try this weekend. The RI multiplier is always a pileup generator. Even though I said at the club meeting that the 10 meter contest would this year be a VHF contest…check 10 meters often during SS…it may open up for a lot of Qs especially out west…and PAC, NT, KL7. Time management is very important in this one if you plan on doing a significant effort…there are only 6 hours to kill…probably 4 of them for sleep after 2 or 3 AM. It’s not as bad as on CW, but it can get pretty slow late Sunday PM. I usually try to be done (24 hours) an hour or two before the closing time. GL! — John, W1XX

K3IU/W1PN: Can you move this item to “News” so it will not be missed?

  2. For those using the K3, this presentation gives setting for the Transmit Equalizer, mic gain and compression. Make sure you are using the correct mic element for these!
