Pretty noisy and congested at times. Lots of encroachers. Easily Worked KH6LC just after sunrise Sunday. Not a lot of EU activity, but had several 5pt callers from there.

  1. Less than 2 hours with BIC. Worked W1XX and my old pal K3KU down in MDC. Low 80 M dipole that works not too well on 160 sorta limited my capability. 73, Ken K3IU

  2. Spent a few hours but was otherwise engaged both evenings. Hopefully I can get better RX antenna going in next few weeks before the real lousy weather comes in.

Comments: This is getting to be a tough slog….up thru both nights. It sure seemed that prop to EU was not up to previous standards…especially the first night. I only logged 37 5-pointers and worked only 27 DXCC countries….way down from last year’s numbers. Score is 20% lower. Yet there were still some pretty big scores. California continues to be a mystery to me. Plenty of 7s and strong signals from 6-land yet I missed ORG and SF and barely got LAX and SB. Also missed NNY, AK and NT. As usual first heard and worked KH6LC at 4:15 AM first night on ESP. He didn’t get any louder later but good the 2nd morning. Worked CTRI’ers W1AN, K3IU, and W1WBB (I think QRP)…never heard KS1J. I did get the feeling at times that I was not as loud as usual…perhaps time to check the radials that may be deteriorating. Another mystery is dupes…commented on by several others. I made an addional 20 Qs as dupes. That’s unusual. Why? Are folks not using computer programs? Maybe insurance contacts? Got me. Season’s best to all! 73! — John, W1XX

  4. Running 5 watts on 160m in a contest would be MUCH more interesting if I was using a high performance aerial… nonetheless, this was fun. Any takers for a M/Op in the Stew Perry TopBand Distance Challenge Sat. after next?? Nice to hear Jim KS1J on 160m! Tnx to ‘XX and ‘AN for contest QSOs too. 73, Bill W1WBB

    Comments:
Nice quiet conditions both evenings from here, very readable US/VE signals, low
sustained K-index (as well as no near-by noise issues) and many active stations
made for enjoyable Topband contesting! Decided to run QRP, as in 2014, but
seemed to really struggle working stations out beyond 1100 miles this year.
Many no responses and just a few “??”.

My stateside mult count was down by 5 sections this year. Only contacts made
west of the Mississippi River (one each) were CO, IA, MO, AR, LA and STX. Esp.
good ears from furthest stations KV0Q, K5NA … and ZF9CW (my only DX – loud!).
Otherwise, to the East, never heard NNY or PR, and could not get through to SC,
    SFL or VI.

While in S and P mode I mostly the used rig attenuator and only called strong
signals at or above a specific S-meter reading — worked very well, resulting
in mostly completed QSOs and extra quiet/comfortable on the ears! Log shows I
was able to Run as well, a little over 25% of the contest. Best rate was 41/hr
for 45 mins just after 2100z on 2nd eve. I missed Sat S/R but added 23 Q’s Sun
morning to bump up over 300 contacts (and add VO1HP as new mult – TNX!).

    Icom 706 @ 5 watts; Tx/Rx ant: 3/8 wv Inv L with short vert rad. (<40' up),
    approx 18 mixed length, mostly 1/8 wv radials; K1EL WinKeyer USB CW interface;
N1MM+ Logger; Vibroplex Deluxe paddle for fills; ClubLog and LoTW user.
