Not to distract from the contest results, but late last week I could hear V84SAA at our sunset, near the noise but readable. I’ve done very little on 160, but It just seemed so freakish to me. That had to be long path, and my inv-L is pretty noisy. He was calling NA but despite the huge pileup, hearing no one unfortunately. Is that as extraordinary as I think it is?

Dave: YES, you were definitely hearing him LP. Stations on the other side of the earth such as V84SAA and XX9D (2 present X-peditions) generally come in LP at our SS and SP during our SR. I’ve worked V84SAA on 40 in the morning on SP but so far no luck as yet on 160 or 80. Don’t think I’ve even heard them yet on 160 tho they have been spotted often. From about late Nov thru about mid-Feb JAs are workable on 80 LP.in the afternoon..best example is 7J4AAL on SSB with a 5-elemernt rotary(!) easily workable from the east coast sometimes 5 x 9. Sometimes stations from Asia come in from tricky directions. Listening with the beverage in different directions will tell you which way to point your TX antenna (if it is directional). Yesterday I worked XX9D on 40 (after a week of trying) in the morning cuz everybody was beaming SP and I could tell from my bevs he was LP. So I pointed my antenna at 170 deg LP which worked. I then spotted him indicating LP. Spots indicating SP or LP can be very helpful. Not enough folks do that. Good DX!!!
