May 11 Meeting Minutes

President XX opened the meeting at 9:10 and asked for the Treasurer’s report. Mike, NG1M, said that the treasury had a good balance. He then presented a pie chart showing expenditures. There were additional comments on specific FD expenditures later in the meeting.
Charlie K1ECU gave a quick update on the recent New England QSO Party. There was good participation by the club members and all had a good time. Everyone agreed that it is a fun contest especially since we are the sought after ones for a change. Charlie also participated in the 7QP but it was noted that the county-state order for both these contests is different making it a pain for some loggers. K3IU Ken said he operated about five hours. Jim KS1J the same. AB1BX- Andy had a good score with 341 Q’s. Everyone was again asked to make certain that for this contest and all others final scores get posted to 3830. That way we can see an estimate of the final club score. Since it is published on the NEQP web site, Jim asked if the CTRI was still actively supporting the WARI certificate. Lots of glassy eyed stares followed. No applications in a long time but we still manage it.
John W1XX then opened up a Field Day discussion. He noted that the brambles, low shrubs etc were cleared out thanks largely to Dean K1HSY providing transportation and getting the right Brush Hog. John noted that a friend of Jim Crawford (SkyScraper contact) was also a great help in muscling around the Hog. It is cleared the best in years. As for tick control, John mentioned that Skyscrapers have a service that will do this and may extend the area covered. Also trudging through the back lot was John K1JSM.
Charlie K1ECU brought everyone up to date with his preparations for satellite Q(s) on FD. He has been practicing with antenna and has successfully made multiple FM contacts and one linear. He asked for azel rotator and someone volunteered to provide (not sure). K1SX Dave will help with the antenna on FD. Charlie will be using TS2000 and try both FM and linear on FD.
NG1M Mike reviewed FD expenditures and pointed out that the Keurig coffee pods were really expensive ($71.00 !) so this time we will have a big pot of brewed coffee. It actually may even taste better. Then Mike took a poll to see who would be present for the three meals: Saturday Lunch, Saturday Dinner and Sunday brunch. He got volunteers for the side dishes which included macaroni salad, potato salad, chips, lettuce and tomato.
K1SX Dave then briefly updated on plans for 6 meters. Since almost all activity on that band is FT8, we will be using it with the FT-991 and Mike’s K1DM moxon antenna.
Radios will be K3 and/or K3s. John-W1XX will again be setting up and linking the stations, PC’s etc. There was talk about Band Pass Filters. John has one automatic and one manual. Biggest interstation interference is 40/20 so it is hoped these will help.
Field Day Message on Friday is RTTY and Charlie K1ECU said he would handle that this year.
Antennas will pretty much be the same as last year. We may be elevating the Hex a few more feet. However lines need to be reset for the MegaWire and the 80 Meter antenna. John XX said he would do this the Friday before Field Day.
Following the regular business meeting John K1JSM and Willy W1LY gave a great talk on their participation in US Islands program They have pretty much activated all islands in RI waters and many in nearby MA. The program showed the typical operating setup, challenges and various locations. Thanks to both John and Willy for this presentation
Next Meeting is June 8th in NK Library. This is a super presentation on K1N Navassa Dxpedition and we are inviting BVARC and others to attend. Should be great!!
73 Jim KS1J
TNX Jim for the nice report. One slight correction: Field Day radios/computer network will be set up by John, W1AN who has the expertise to do so. W1XX does not. Also Dean K1HSY volunteered to help W1XX with shooting lines over trees the Friday before FD. We could use another person or two to help with this as well. Let W1XX know if you are available. If someone with a potato gun is available, we could try that as well. — John, W1XX
