2020 IARU HF Contest

I spent a bit of time (4.1 hrs) in this contest as SOAB HP CW only. It is almost a no-brainer contest where you can work anybody on any band. Of course no band dupes allowed. What made it even more fun was that the bands were open! My 80/40 dipole(MFJ special) that I strung up was not very high and didn’t work too well at all. Hope others in the club got into the mix. Here are my results. I have not discovered a way in this form to change the text to a fixed pitch font so that it is more easily readable.[7/17/20 – and I was just reminded how to save preformatting using pre and /pre. The mind is a terrible thing to lose]

  1. I spent ~12 BIT and after 200 Qs, concluded I need to learn an “easier contesting mode”, like CW. And/or buy an AMP! For this contest, Low Power Phone was HARD! And painful – difficult to break into a European pileups. Or call CQ and no one answers. Or call CQ, get a run going, a HP station would simply move into your frequency…

Lots of activity on 20M – very very little on the low bands. There were rag chewers on 40M & 80M, but very few contesters. Didn’t really understand it till I went outside and noticed all the electrons were being sucked South towards XX’s QTH…

I reviewed the winning logs from last year’s contest to try to gain some tactical insights, but I think I made some mistakes in where to point the beam. It was mostly towards Europe, but sometimes I would get frustrated and point it West get grab some “easy CONUS stations”. Might have had the wrong mix of East & West. Should have stayed up later and skipped getting up early Sunday morning – no one new was on for the last few hours of the contest.

Highlight – I made my first contact with New Zealand! Actually, first contact with that part of the world in general. Multiple contacts with Russia – I always grin when I think what work would say about that!
