CTRI Field Day 2012

CTRI Field Day – 2012
(A preview of February 2013 – NP3U)

Here is the plan for “Field Day” 2012 for CTRI Contest Group:

At 1300 on Saturday, June 23, 2012, we will gather at the QTH of our past president, W1AN.
We will put together two RTTY stations using K3’s and RTTY Meister stations running N1MM Logger.
Our objective is to activate two RTTY stations with computers networked together running the N1MM
Logger.  We will be keeping track of problems and potential challenges while we throw contacts to
other Field Day stations.  We’re going to use commerical electric power, and we will use the
W1AN antenna farm as our pipeline to the ionosphere.

K3’s will be supplied by K3IU and K1DM.  W1AN’s K3 will be “standing by” while serving as our
“multiplier seeker” station.  RTTY Meisters are being supplied by W1AN.

What we need from members planning on traveling to KP4 land in February is your participation
in this and upcoming training/practice events.  This will be a team effort, and we’re holding try-outs
for the team by organizing these practice events that coincide with RTTY contests.

We want this Saturday to be a time of perfecting of operator skills, practicing set-up, and
preparing to meet Murphy’s attempts to stall progress.  We’d also expect to have some fun playing
ham radio.

So here’s the summary of the event:

                    Time:  1300 EDT
                    Place: QTH of W1AN
                    What to bring:  Your self
                                    some snacks

We look forward to seeing you at “Field Day 2012” for CTRI Contest Group.

Best 73 Mike, K1DM, President, CTRI Contest Group

  1. Mike,

Thanks for posting this. I will be there.

I’d like to add that after doing a quick review of past FD statistics, I found that the number of FD digital QSOs has been steadily increasing, from 21,459 in 2006 to 45,099 in 2011 (http://www.arrl.org/files/file/ContestResults/2011/2011-FD-QST.pdf p. 73). So while we might think there won’t be a lot of activity, I think we may find ourselves getting more practice than we anticipate. It would be great if those club members not participating at W1AN would look for us and spot us. I hope to hear lots of CTRI members on the air!

    73,
    Pat, NG1G

  2. The two-operator battery powered 100-watt station of W 1 BRAVO YANKEE HOTEL in West Mass will be looking for the CTRI Field Day station (callsign?) on all modes including RTTY for QSOs. Antennae are 80 meter dipole, 40/20 vertical dipole on a fiberglass pole that was demonstrated at a recent CTRI meeting at W1XX and proven quite successful in last year’s FD, and a 40 – 10 meter vertical. QTH is a log cabin on Lake Lower Nawkeg (sp?) in Ashburnham, MA…the West Mass ARRL section. Good luck to all on Field Day.

  3. Thanks for asking, because I forgot to mention the call sign. Based on the discussion at the meeting, I believe we are planning on using:

Whiskey Alpha One Radio Radio that’s WA1RR.

So if you are not at the W1AN QTH operating with us, you should be looking for us, working us, and spotting us!

Thanks for your help. Good luck in the contest.

    Mike, K1DM

We will be two transmitter, home station, commercial power (100 watts transmitter power)

  4. Call: W1BYH
    Operator(s): W1BYH W1XX
    Station: W1BYH/1

    Class: 1B Battery LP
    QTH: WMA
    Operating Time (hrs): 22

    Summary:
Band CQ Qs Ph Qs Dig Qs
    ————————————
    80 79 188 0
    40 115 158 15
    20: 121 63 29

    Total: 344 419 15

    Total Qs = 808 Score = 2,594

Norm and I operated from his log cabin retreat on a lake in Ashburnham, MA. We ran 1 transmitter at 100 watts with solar charged batteries. We operated pretty much in shifts throughout the night but took plenty of breaks. We had a few technical issues but not enough to slow us down much. The 20 meter antenna is the simple vertical dipole (wire taped to a 32-ft. fiberglass pole that was displayed at a W1XX CTRI meeting a few months ago) and it worked famously. We did S & P and could run ’em on CQs pretty consistently. One of our objectives was to work WA1RR on digital and the MISSION WAS ACCOMPLISHED. Don’t know who the WA1RR op was. We hope all went well at the WA1RR operation. We had a great time. The QTH is a beautiful site surrounded by a lake pretty much on three sides. Had lotsa fun. 73! — John, W1XX
