CTRI Contest Group

Pat,

Regarding the 11/12 meeting. John XX has spoken of a possible alternative venue. The NK Library lower conference room only holds 10 and no snacks. If we can find a better location, great. But if we do change I’d like to know ASAP so I can tell the library we don’t need the room. I have been very politely scolded that I didn’t let them know on a previous occasion.

“Using the Reverse Beacon Network in Contesting” was an agenda item for the last meeting – which became OBE. I would love to see a demonstration of RBN. As well as how best to set up your spotting filters, at the cluster or within N1MM, or?

We should discuss the efforts and results to date of our NPOTA activations and any further plans until year’s end.

I can give a brief Contest Manager’s Report. John AN can tell us about CQWWSSB

Hope to see y’all on the 12th; wherever.

James

Hi Larry,

Thank you very much for the invitation! I recall one of our members coming to your meeting back then, though I don’t remember who it was. Our next club meeting is November 12, and I’ve put this on the agenda. I’m certain we won’t have trouble finding someone who would be willing to give a presentation to your club. Once I get a volunteer (it may be me) I’ll coordinate the meeting date with you.

The HCRA meets the first Friday of each month excluding July and August. I’m starting to fill the 2017 meeting dates and currently have open January and March – June.

The HCRA meets the first Friday of every month at Holyoke Hospital at 7:30 pm. The web site is: www.hcra.org and we’re on Facebook too. We offer to take our guest speaker out to dinner right before the meeting too.

Would you guys be interested in coming out and speaking and maybe showing some slides or video or you all in action?

We have a diverse group of hams in the club and usually average 40 – 50 at each meeting. Many chase DX, contest, do digital and much more.

Please let me know if you’d be interested and what month would work for you.

Thank you and 73,

Interesting. Anyone have a recollection of this talk/presentation to the HCRA? Anyone have a thought on what we might want to do, if anything? Outreach to new contesters?

NPOTA Activation in CT

Greetings all:

K1CYQ and I activated Roger Williams Monument, NM22 today. Other than four bus loads of middle schoolers from Killingly, CT dropping in unannounced for an hour at lunch time, we had no problems at all, if you don’t count the sirens, motorcycles, Acela train horn and other traffic. Headphones are useful. The two rangers on duty didn’t require any permits and were happy to see us.

From 12:30 to 2:45, we made 4 contacts on 40 and 49 on 20, all SSB. Tried CW on 20 with no replies. Band condx were fair to good. Radio was IC-7300 running 100 watts, battery powered to a
PAC-12 antenna. There were no ropes or wires in the trees, stakes in the ground or generators running. I learned that these are the things that the rangers aren’t fond of. We made contacts with
Washington, many southwestern states, many mid western and southern states and a few short skip nearby. For DX, we logged VE and CU3. We will positively return in a few weeks. At least a dozen
stations said that we had given them a new one, so Roger Williams Monument must still be somewhat needed, even now in the tenth month. Records state that there have only been seven activations with 529 contacts to this date. There’s room for lots more.

I have learned that the Providence EMA is planning to activate NM22 on November 12th. We will likely do another activation before that date.

Gentlemen,

To accommodate our weekend warriors, let’s try for any time that works for most this weekend or next. We had already talked about the weekend of the 22nd (the weekend before CQWWDX SSB).

Roger Williams is OK; but Dr. Mike will have to call the Assistant Superintendent of the Roger Williams Memorial National Park. Which is not a bad thing; she was really pleasant and sounded very reasonable. But she might need a form checked off.

8 mile river sounds equally doable. Probably a lot less hassle, eh.

CTRI Meeting Saturday 8/13

Gentlemen,

The scheduled CTRI Contest Group monthly meeting is set for Saturday 13 August 2016 starting at 1000 at the North Kingstown Free Library, 100 Boone Street, North Kingstown, RI.

This meeting will be the last one for the rest of the year held in the larger upper level Conference Room.

Attached is the lasted 2016 CTRI Contest Calendar / Meeting Schedule.

73 James K1SD

CTRI 2016 Contest Calendar 8.8.2016abr

CTRI Meeting Saturday 23 July

James,

Thanks for posting this. May I suggest we add to the agenda the club contest competition: Do we want to continue it? Modify it? Also, Ken is looking for someone to take the responsibility of keeping the score sheet spread sheet should we elect to continue.

I will not be at tomorrow’s meeting. We are unveiling my wife’s grave stone at the cemetery tomorrow morning, and I have family and guests in from out of town. In addition, the woman who was closest to Linda was just this week diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. Needless to say, I’ve been a bit distracted for the past couple weeks.

The club trustee change has been submitted to ARRL VEC, but we have not seen any results yet. I will personally check on its status this coming Thursday when I am at HQ for my volunteer work. There have been some recent issues at FCC with the licensing servers (or something like that) so that may be the issue. I’ll let everyone know once I find out.

Mike (RFJ) and John (AN) know what’s going on with the non-profit part of the incorporation.

James, I trust you are feeling much better, and that you’re on the road back to perfect health.

Ed, I haven’t yet made time to look into broadcasting the club meetings on the internet.
