Antenna Part needed – HyGain TH-6DXX trap (parts)

Gang,

Would anyone happen to have a trap from a HyGain TH-6DXX tri-band beam that I could talk you out of?  I need one of the “clear” plastic spacers inside the trap.  Each trap contains 4 of these spacers, and I have managed to lose one for the antenna I am rehabilitating.  Since this antenna is no longer in production, it may be difficult to  purchase a replacement.

The TH-7 DX may have the identical spacers, but I haven’t taken apart a trap for that antenna to check.

If you have one, please let me know, or you can bring it to the meeting on Saturday, and we  can negotiate.

Thanks, 73, Mike, K1DM

Meeting Notice, May 2014

It’s that time again. If you are familiar with the interactive meeting notice skip down to “Topics“. This is an interactive meeting notice. What, you may ask, is an interactive meeting notice? As the phrase suggests, it is a meeting notice which requires interaction by the readers. For example: we need to have topics for presentation at the meeting; we need presenters; we need volunteers to provide lunch; we need to know who is coming to the meeting so the quantity of lunch portions may be determined, and so on. This post will be updated as interactions (comments) are appended.

Topics

  1. Contest Report
  2. W1AW/1 for CT and RI by K1DM/W1AN and W1XX,
  3. ANTENNA and Amplifier Mod presentation by K1SD
  4. Matters Arising

Lunch provider:

Coffee and Drinks by: K3IU (Coffee);

Members who will attend: W1XX, K1DM, K3IU, NG1G

W1AW/1 Connecticut Success!

Kudos to John W1AN and Mike K1DM for pulling off a hugely successful W1AW/1 operation in Connecticut in the name of the CTRI Contest Group.  As a Rhode Island resident, I am proud that Ocean Staters played a significant role in helping our fellow Nutmeggers put in many operating hours at the W1AN station as W1AW/1.  Every time I was there, so were K1SD, KI1G, and KB1RFJ from Rhode Island.  It was a great warm-up experience for Rhode Island’s first crack at W1AW/1 operation July 23 – 29.

As the coordinator (via CTRI CG) for W1AW/1 Team RI…thanks to W1AN, the on-line scheduling app for RI has already been developed just like Connecticut’s.  Scheduling and operating guidelines will now be tailored for Rhode Island and e-mail solicitations to join Team RI will be forthcoming shortly.  From the CT experience, operating W1AW/1 is a blast!

Thanks Connecticut for paving the way!  73!

John, W1XX

NEQP allows digital

I noticed things from the FAQ not covered in the rules including a couple mentions of digital so I sent an e-mail to clarify. This is what I got back:

At 01:33 PM 5/2/2014, you wrote:

We count digital QSOs the same as CW, 2 points each. SSB is one point each QSO.

So if people are looking for W1AW/1 you can give the NEQP exchange and they will get credit for it. We will be set up for RTTY at NX6T for the 7QP and ARI contests and now will also work any 1-landers we find! Hopefully some RTTY skimmers are going to spot you guys when you are on RTTY!

W1AW/1 – CT and NEQP for CTRI members

Dear CTRI Members;

As you know, W1AN and I are managing the CT part of the W1AW/1-CT Centennial Operation the 7 days starting April 30 through 6 May (UTC).  You also know that the NEQP along with the INQP and 7th Area QP happens the weekend inside this time period.  We would like to continue the club tradition of submitting BIG scores for the club during the NEQP, so John, W1AN has opened his station to all club members during the contest period.  With W1AW/1 as the call sign we should be able to have some amazing runs.

The challenge will be keeping 5 bands with both SSB and CW active through the contest period. We will have 3 chairs at W1AN available and have offers from other stations who have agreed to host guests. Being near impossible to fill all possible slots from three chairs with CTRIers, we are going to eventually open up the offer to the entire W1AW/1-CT team and host stations and see if we can fill the slots that way.  But, I think you all would agree we would prefer to give first choice to our own club members.

Time is getting short for our planning, so please contact John W1AN with your preferred operating times. Please respond very soon.

Thank you for the support. 73, Mike, K1DM

Please remember for the entire W1AW/1-CT week, John will have his station available to CTRI members. Please access the schedule at w1aw.dxusa.net and select your time slots. If you need a password contact K1DM and cc. W1AN.

The U.S. Mail Brings More Paper

This past week I received a couple more unexpected contest certificates. If you are like me, you quickly forget which contests you worked and when. The first received was for the Indiana QSO Party for 2013. Yes, I recollect that one. This was an ‘aside’ to last years NEQP.  First Place Connecticut, Single-Op High it says. Nice to get. The envelope included a reminder that this years NEQP, INQP and 7th Area contests are on again the same weekend. Get ready!

The second certificate was from the RDXC, the Russian DX Gang. This one says 2012 Multi-Op, Single TX, 4th Place USA. Not a bad return for a fun time with K1DM and W1WBB.

Hope we can put a lot of time together in the upcoming weeks for NEQP and W1AW/1. Coming up Quickly!

John, W1AN

2013-2014 CQWW WPX SSB Results

I haven’t heard anything from anybody about this contest, but I sure hope that some of youse guys that prefer SSB are going to be on the air in this contest. After this one, the next contest in the CTRI Champions competition is the first weekend in May, so I will publish an updated howgozit spreadsheet after I get the results from this contest entered. Please post your results here by Replying to this posting.

Operating W100AW

CTRI CG members;

I went up to HQ in Newington this morning to archive some more QSL cards.  I didn’t have lots today, and I finished before 11:00 AM, so I decided to walk across the parking lot and give W1AW a try.

Joe set me up on 10-meter phone and turned me loose.  I spent about 30 minutes practicing managing a pile-up.  I started by calling CQ about 3 times, and that’s all it took, I had a good pile of operators calling me, and it was difficult to grab a call-sign.

At any rate, after about 30 minutes, I had about 30 stations in the log.  For my first attempt, that felt pretty good.

Now, here’s an opportunity to get some practice:  If you would like to operate W100AW, just show up.  It’s first-come, first-served, but the league would very much like to keep the station on the air as much as possible this year.  The rules they are using are just the same as the regular guest operations; mornings from 10:00 to 12:00, and afternoons from 13:00 to (I think) 15:30.  Joe will patch you from the transceiver of your choice to the appropriate antenna, show you how to turn the rotor, and then let you go to town.  They are using N1MM as the logging program, which most of us are familiar with.

I didn’t work anything exotic, but I sure had fun.  I plan on operating at least once per week between now and our time for the W1AW/1 event.  I might even figure out how to handle a phone pile-up by the end of April!

Give it a try.  You might just enjoy yourself!  73, Mike, K1DM  (if you want to share a ride – let me know, maybe we can work something).

MFJ 259B Analyzer Question

I know several of you also have the MFJ 259B Analyzer.  I have been keeping mine plugged into the charger wall-wart when not in use.  I now find that I get a LOW voltage reading a few seconds after unplugging it.  The voltage is 13+ as long as it is plugged in….but not conducive to field use.  I assume I need new re-chargeable batteries?  Should you leave it plugged in when not in use?  I found if I didn’t, the voltage would read LOW when I went to use it.  What is your experience on how to best have it ready for use?  How long do the batteries continue to take a charge? TNX & 73!
