N1MM Software Topics

I saw this email on the N1MM reflector and recalled that there was some confusion about LOGTHENPOP & LOGTHENGRAB during the run up to CQWPX RTTY a couple weeks ago. The first email was cut from one from Rick Ellison, N2AMG, the digital programmer of N1MM, in response to a query on the reflector.

Subject: LOGTHENPOP vs LOGTHENGRAB

This should clarify as explained by the guy who wrote it…
Ken

“Log then pop allows more control as it allows the operator click on calls
that they see in the screen and stack them on the bandmap to work in
succession qfterwards(sic)…

Log then grab instead of using the bandmap just grabs the next available
call from the grab window on the Digital window. Sometimes you might be
grabbing a garbage callsign as some calls do not decode correctly and still
get placed in the grab window. So the operator needs to be aware of the call
that is being grabbed..

Thank you for that elucidation, Ken. I suspected as much from reading the manual’s description of where the “grabbed” calls came from, but with  no direct experience I couldn’t swear to it.

BTW, in the little time I spent working 80M this weekend I used ESM, and found it very helpful as long as I didn’t screw up the sequence by hitting SPACE too early. I just need to better train my brain and hand to the motions.

Gang,

Let’s include Rick in these discussions so he can stay up to speed as he learns N1MM Logger.  Does someone want to volunteer to put these e-mails on the Web site so we know where they are? Also, we need to start documenting all the little things we learn about the Logger during contests so we know where all the tricks are stored.
We had trouble this CW weekend with the program freezing on the Windows-7 computer that ran the Yaesu 1000MP or the side of the room where Ken’s K3 was used during the RTTY WPX weekend.  I found info on the FAQ (I think) for N1MM about how to install the logger on Windows 7 computers.  I didn’t see anything that looked unusual (make sure you’re Administrator when you install the software), but I do not have a Windows-7 machine.
I’ll be in contact via e-mail only through Thursday.

I have seen something somewhere in the last couple of weeks saying that Win7 problems, assuming that N1MM Logger was installed correctly, is probably caused bu RFI. I can’t imagine how RFI would cause problems with the software, but that is what was reported. It was recommended that ALL equipment have chassis’ connected together and to the station ground. It was NOT reported that this cured the problem with crashes.

The special installation instructions for N1MM on a Win7 machine are mainly about “where” to install it because of the Win7 “security” setup that objects to a program writing to a file in the \Program Files folder where N1MM (and virtually everything else) used to be installed. The default installation folder is now in \N1MM Logger folder. Also as Mike says, the installation should be made by right clicking on the installation file and selecting “Run as Administrator.”

Hi Guys,

I did not experience any major issues with N1MM this weekend, only a minor
annoyance on the computer connected to the FT-1000, every time I would click
on a spot to go work it, the software would put the rig in dual receive mode
which gives the headphone audio a whole new sound. Probably just a setting
that  I need to change somewhere, but finding the somewhere is the hard
part. I did not use ESM mode, just programmed the F-Keys as I have always
used them in Writelog.

Other than that, the weekend started out on record pace and stayed so until
06Z on Sunday when my K3 shut off, the FT-1000 did not hear any signals and
there was an alarm that I have never heard before that was beeping away in
the shack. Needless to say that after being up and on the rig for 30 hours
prior to all this, some mental chaos ensued.

Turns out that the alarm was an overvoltage alarm on my 12V power supply and
it had turned off the DC output. No 12V = no K3 and none of my other
switching widgets were working. I do not have a back up power supply and am
still off the air. Moral of this story is to know your stations Achilles
heel. Once I decide on what to replace the power supply with, I will be
getting two.

Hope everyone had fun….

2012 CQ WPX RTTY Results

Sorry I’m late in getting this posted. If I say that I got distracted, you older folks out there will understand.  🙂 .

Please post your results here by adding comments to this posting. Some of you have already sent emails on the CTRICG Yahoo reflector and I can grab them OK.  Thanks. When it looks like I’ve got all the results, I’ll update the Champions Leaderboard spreadsheet and post it here.

ARRL DX CW Certificate Received!

Believe it or not, I, a ham who is not a CW operator, received today a certificate for 1st place in the 2011 ARRL DX CW contest, Single-op, Assisted, Low Power, RI. There were two entries from RI. Apparently I had a 50/50 chance!

They’ll give these certificates to just about anybody, won’t they?

Dayton HamVention

I hope I’m sending this post to the right place. Somehow the site seems to change every time I get on it, but I’ll give it the good ol’ college try.

A while back I thought some of the CTRI members mentioned getting together for a trip to Dayton this year. I need to visit my parents in Cincinnati and thought the HamVention weekend would be good place to start my visit. The HamVention is May 18-20, and I found flights into Dayton for $330 (round-trip of course). Some members in the past rented a van and drove down there. My plan is to fly into Dayton Friday night, hopefully meet up with CTRI members someplace, possibly the annual HamVention Pizza Party for contesters (look it up) , attend the event on Saturday, then drive south to see my folks and spend a few days there. Who’s up for an “unofficial” CTRI meeting at the Dayton HamVention on Saturday, at let’s say 1200 noon in the food court? A walk around the flea market, en mass, would possibly follow the meeting. Any takers? 73 de KB1LN Bob

We have the following planning so far to attend the awards luncheon tomorrow Saturday at noon at Gregg’s in North Kingston. I think we had nearly 20 last year. I will call the restaurant later today with the total count. If you would like to attend you can reply here or on the yahoo site. Its a good time! If you find you can make it at the last minute you are welcome. Seats are available!

Site Usage Last Half of January, 2012

Here are of couple of charts of usage of the site the last half of last month.

There were intervals of several days when the site was not blocked to non-members as we experimented with how to safely open much of the site. During these intervals we were visited by nearly 100 non-members. What is not yet clear is how many of them were curious hams versus “intruders” looking for ways to do damage of one sort or another.

Remote Operation Project

Hello Guys, I plan on testing out a remote internet operation along with fellow ham Joe, K1IKE with hardware from Remoterig.com and am looking for a donation of a trap vertical that will cover 80-10 meters. The setup should be able to allow remote access from HRD. Initially we will probably use an Icom 706 with the rig at one end and the removable control head at another. Check out the website above and also Eham for reviews. This looks like a slick solution to remote control.

The initial reason for trying this is to accommodate a 92 year old active ham who is moving into an assisted living facility.

Summary of Club effort in 2011 ARRL 10m Contest

A little summary from your new club Contest Manager of the CTRI CG-focused effort in the recent ARRL 10 Meter contest of December 2011 follows.  We had record setting participation and the best total score ever submitted for this event for our individual club by big margins…great job by the more than 15 club participants — it was indeed a team effort!

Claimed scores from the 15 logs submitted in 2011 (double our previous best of logs submitted back in 2003) totaled about 2.69M pts (well more than double our previous group best of 1.14M pts from 2002).  Well done to John W1AN and Matt WE1H who were part of the 2002 AND 2011 efforts.  Of course, log checking must occur at ARRL HQ but the club’s final effort in the 2011 10M Contest will certainly be historic.  I expect results to be published in late fall of 2012.

ARRL Affiliated Club Competition records dating as far back as 1995 were found for the 10 M Contest.  CTRI CG first formally appeared in 2002, placing 3rd in the “Local Club” category.  They won 1st place as a “Local Club” in 2003 and were awarded the “Wooden Gavel” with 719K pts as the solar cycle had begun its downturn.  Due to larger membership these days we typically now compete in the very competitive “Medium Club” size category.

The ARRL Contest Branch now reports with the log submission deadline complete almost 5300 total logs submitted for the 2011 10M event…**the most logs EVER submitted for ANY ARRL Contest**!!  So, participation was outstanding and conditions were very good.  But as the solar cycle continues to swing upward, as our own KI1G said “…wait ’til next year!”.  Things should be even more fun in December 2012 as the solar flux and sunspot numbers are likely near their peak…as contesters and DXers we can only hope.

We certainly have the opportunity to put up big numbers again and challenge our expected record-setting 2011 New England QSO Party (NEQP) club score with all our 1×1 callsigns on-air during the 2012 running of the NEQP this May.  That should be alot of fun as well!

Good luck and hope to see you in an upcoming contest…
