NPOTA

Gentlemen,

I know that other clubs have informal breakfast gatherings every week. I know the Newport guys do it every week on Thursday morning and obviously they’re the retired. I would fully support a regular get together. If we have a quorum of officers, we could even do some business.

A rotation of venues would be great. Narragansett, Eastern Connecticut, Newport, Wickford.

Mike, what do you suggest? Mr. T’s in Narragansett Saturday January 9th at, say, 0800?

Hi James et al,

I spoke to a Newport club member who is also on the board of the Touro Synagogue and told me that the club will definitely activate the Synagogue. However, from what he said, it was apparent
that he doesn’t understand the nature of on the air events like this. He doesn’t envision getting on the air more than once or twice. I asked, “All year?” His reply was, “Well, asking
for more than that will probably not be well received.” So, we have more work to do there. Just activating the place once in all of 2016 will be a problem.

As you said, the Blackstone River Corridor doesn’t need to be registered each time it is activated because of the nature of the particular place. There are relatively few of the 430+ Nationally designated Parks in which a ham (or anyone) actually resides. Blackstone River Corridor includes 24 communities over 400,000 acres and hundreds of hams. CTRI members K6ND and W1YRC and any other resident hams of the district may merely walk into their shack and go on the air. We must promise to upload to LoTW ASAP. Since only LoTW confirmations will be used for the event, stations who are not using LoTW need not activate since they cannot provide any credit to stations worked. I don’t think all hams who have shown interest realize that yet.
K1NPS must open an LoTW account and someone must be designated to upload contacts made.

Jim, et al,

When I last heard from John W1XX he said “wait till next year”. I know that the Newport club has been notified and they’ve acknowledged the activity. I think, at least, one other club has been contacted. Bob W1YRC included info in his last Section Activity Report. The folks that live in the Blackstone Valley, i.e., W1YRC and Will K6ND, can operate from home. Bob YRC says that other types of activity must be coordinated through the League. I am not yet well versed on the details. As the Trustee, I would think that I must be aware (give permission??) of any use of the K1NPS call. Again, we need to work out the details of the NPS Centennial activation.

I too have not heard anything on the holiday lunch. Any suggestions guys?

Hi James

Any plan of attack for the CTRI with the new call? BTW, I have seen NO word regarding the next meeting or the holiday lunch. The last I saw was Chuck’s admonition that after making reservations last year, practically no one showed.

Merry Christmas and 73!

We got it!

I received the email from FCC granting the National Park Service Centennial Group the call sign K1NPS effective today.

Now, what do we do with it?

CTRI Contest Notes

Seasons Greetings CTRI Contesters,

I hope everyone was able to get on the air last weekend for the ARRL 10 Meter Contest. I especially hope that everyone had a much better time than I did; the spirits of propagation were ignoring me.

Next on the CTRI Contest Calendar is the ARRL RTTY Roundup on Saturday 1800 UTC through Sunday 2400 UTC January 2nd and 3rd. Everybody works everybody. Multipliers are states/provinces and DXCC. Full rules are here:

http://www.arrl.org/rtty-roundup

For a tune-up for the Roundup you might want to play some in the OK DX RTTY Contest. It runs this Saturday December 19th 0000 UTC through 2359 UTC. That is, it starts at 7:00 PM tonight – Friday.

http://okrtty.crk.cz/index.php?page=english

Additional details of the upcoming CTRI Calendar:

a. No meeting scheduled for December.

b. A holiday luncheon has been discussed for January but, to my knowledge, no date or venue has been established. The North Kingstown Library is not available for a meeting in January.

c. The next scheduled meeting is February 6th 1030 AM at the NK Library. Remember this will be held in the small conference room on the lower level and comes with restrictions.

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

K1SD ARRL 10 meter

This was an utterly pathetic effort on my part. 1 hour and 43 minutes of frustration. Many signals were fairly strong; they CQed in my face. That happened a lot. I could see it if I was running 50 watts; I was at 1+ Kw. And I’ve got 4 full size elements at 70’ and another 4 elements at 42’. Arrrgggg!! I got so frustrated trying to get one Caribbean mult that I cranked the Titan up to 2+ Kw. It took the 2nd or 3rd call to get him! (Does that admission DQ me?) I didn’t even turn the radio on on Sunday; I did some “fun” stuff with the wife instead.

Updated Contest Calendar

Gentlemen,

Attached is the updated Contest Calendar. Note:

No January meeting or luncheon date or venue is yet identified.

For both the February 6 and March 12 meetings, I have reserved the NK Library small conference room on the lower level from 1000 to 1230. Be aware this conference room is limited to a maximum of 10 persons and there is NO food or drink allowed. Maybe we can set up a Net Meeting for the overflow crowd?

Happy and safe Thanksgiving to all.

Idiom Press

Many of us have done (frustrating) business with Idiom Press for, especially, their automated rotator control boards. Hopefully, this move will be a significant improvement.

Ham Radio Accessory Dealer, Publisher Idiom Press Changing Hands

Idiom Press of Merlin, Oregon, has announced the sale of its assets to Ham Supply of Elizabeth, Colorado. Owned by Wayne Ordakowski, N0UN, Ham Supply is a new business formed to manufacture and distribute the products previously offered by Idiom Press, as well as other new Amateur Radio products.

Ham Supply will honor warranties for existing Idiom Press products, and once production is resumed, Ham Supply will honor all existing orders placed with Idiom Press after reconfirming them with the customer. Ordakowski has said he intends to have the new business in full operation by the first week of January 2016, although some previously placed orders may ship earlier.

Idiom Press published The Complete DXer by Bob Locher, W9KNI, who started the business before turning it over to his son Rob, W7GH, who is returning to the computer programming field.

K1TTT CLUSTER PORT CHANGE

The following email posted on the N1MM reflector by K1TTT…

“If you are trying to use my cluster node on port 23 it won’t work. change to 7373 instead. please pass this on to anyone you know, it has been down for months now and still getting 30 connect requests per minute!”

Keyboard F Key Template

Gentlemen,

At the last meeting I thanked John AN and Dr. Mike for the F Key Template that we used at Field Day. I’ve been using it ever since tailored to each contest I’ve operated. Ed suggested that I post it to the web site. Sorry it took so long (er, I forgot).

Here’s the template that I’ve set up for Sweepstakes SSB this weekend. It’s just a Word file and easily modified for your circumstances.

Good luck this weekend and hope to work many CT and RI members!

YCCC Sweepstakes Tips – a Gift from PVRC

Anyone planning to play in ARRL Sweepstakes this weekend may find this helpful or, at least, somewhat interesting.

73 James K1SD

=================== Original Message ================

YCCC does not usually put forth an all-out effort in the Sweepstakes contests, as the Northeast is typically geo-challenged in this domestic contest. So we let our friends to the west have at it, and we are happy to participate and have fun.

Other contest clubs take Sweepstakes much more seriously! I happened to be doing a bit of web ‘recon’ and came across a gem on the PVRC website, a strategic encouragement for their members to participate in Sweepstakes. It includes a lot of specific operating tips which may (or might not) be applicable to those of us joining the fray this weekend.

So I’ll share the link:

Who wouda thunk that I would ever take First Place in a 160 meter contest?!? Well, I received in the mail today from the League a Certificate for First Place, Single Op Unlimited, High Power, Rhode Island Section in the ARRL 160 meter contest in 2014. My big antenna is the NVIS 80 meter dipole and tuner at the amp. My winning score was 9789.
