FYI

A little more background on todays discussion.

Here is my original email to Bob on the subject. (I replied to the wrong email and subsequently sent it direct to him).

Note this was in response to the following email Bob had sent to his list of RI hams. (So you CT guys didn’t get it). It was *not* a Division meeting but a prep meeting for the semi-annual Board of Directors meeting.

…………………….

I am planning to attend the New England Cabinet meeting in Springfield on

January 9th. Our Director, Tom K1KI typically holds an all-day meeting a

week before the regular semi-annual ARRL Board of Directors meeting. Tom

invites all New England Section Managers and ARRL affiliated club Presidents

in addition to other division leaders. At the Cabinet meeting, participants

may bring up timely topics to discuss and possibly move K1KI to bring them

to the Board’s attention. Do you have issues that you would like me to bring

to the meeting? Please e mail your suggestions and questions to me at

w1yrc ASAP.

I promised you a short Activity Report this month and I intend to keep my

promise. Sincere wishes from your ARRL staff workers for a wonderful

Christmas and happy, healthy and DX filled New Year. Thank you for your

support this year. I’m hoping for more of it in 2016. See you next year….

Surviving the Snow & Meeting

We’ve “only” gotten 5 – 6″ in East Greenwich, but it’s still snowing, albeit lightly.  The worst should be over around here.  They’ve been plowing my street regularly and it is reasonably passable; driveway’s not though.  The snow is “supposed” to be less further south of here.  I’ll wait to see if I can get out in the morning.

If we want to cancel, so be it.  It will be tough to reschedule though since we are booked with Championship Contests every Saturday until our next scheduled meeting at the NK Library on March 12.

Snow Storm Results???

I don’t know how you all are making out.  It’s still snowing here in Salem, CT.  I have already surpassed 12 inches.  At this point, I am less than optimistic that I will get out of the driveway in time for the meeting on Saturday morning.  As long as I have power, I will be able to communicate via the internet!

More to follow.  Mike, K1DM

Hi Robert-

For National Historic Trails, the following rules apply:

k) Operations from National Historic Trails may be conducted within one hundred (100) feet of the trail itself. Operations from private property are prohibited, unless permission has been received.

m) Activations of National Historic Trails, National Scenic Trails, National Parkways, National Rivers and National Wild and Scenic Rivers may not be conducted from fixed-location, permanent stations ("home" stations).

So, KS1J can hand out Blackstone from his home QTH, but not the Rochambeau trail. To activate the trail, he must operate away from his home station.

Subject: Question on NPOTA credit

Hi Sean,

Thank you for your help when I was starting up to be active in the NPOTA program. I am all set now, I believe, and have made several contacts with more to come.

As Section Manager, I am the target for many questions from members. After all, that’s what they pay dues for, right?

Jim, KS1J lives in Barrington, RI. The Washington-Rochambeau Trail runs from Newport to Washington, DC and goes through Barrington, on Routes 114 and 103, not far from Jim’s home.

Jim asked me this morning if he must literally be set up directly on the road such as in a mobile or RV to qualify as activating the Wash-Roch Trail. He lives a short distance away in the same town.

Can he activate the Trail from his home? My personal feeling is if the Trail runs through a particular town, everyone in that town should qualify. The station does not need to be set up on the centerline of the highway.

My personal situation is a little different since I am in Blackstone River Corridor, HP49. The map for the Corridor includes my town (and many others) as part of the 400,000 acres designated.

Thank you for helping.

Wall Paper Notice

I received in today’s mail a new item of wall paper from the league saying I had won First Place Rhode Island Section, Single op, High Power, for 50 MHz band in the 2015 January ARRL VHF Contest.

My score was 91.

As my father used to say, ” Nothing ventured, nothing lost.” Maybe it was “nothing gained.” 🙂

Breakfast “Meeting”

Yipee. A breakfast meeting has now been scheduled for this Saturday, January 9, at 8 AM at “Ts Restaurant,” 91 Point Judith Rd., Narragansett. So as to prevent the uninitiated to the area from driving around in circles, here’s some info that will help you find the venue.  Point Judith Rd., is Rte 108.  T’s is a stand alone structure in the Salt Pond Plaza directly across from Stop and Shop Supermarket. Marshall’s is at the other end of the plaza.  “Tiffany’s” (a movie) was a joke started by some unnamed individual who should have his coax cut. TNX to KB1RFJ for going ahead and making a reservation.  Bon apetite!  — John, W1XX

NPOTA

Gentlemen,

I know that other clubs have informal breakfast gatherings every week. I know the Newport guys do it every week on Thursday morning and obviously they’re the retired. I would fully support a regular get together. If we have a quorum of officers, we could even do some business.

A rotation of venues would be great. Narragansett, Eastern Connecticut, Newport, Wickford.

Mike, what do you suggest? Mr. T’s in Narragansett Saturday January 9th at, say, 0800?

Help Needed

Dear Friends,

I hope you all had a Happy Christmas or Yule or whatever you may celebrate. Due to circumstances beyond my control I spent mine alone. But, though it is the cause it is not what this email is about. Due to the failure of my marriage and my poor health I will be moving back to NJ.   I need to ask your help in packing up what was left to me. Please feel free to PM/Email to Bubafish@nullhotmail.com if you can help. I am currently bed ridden. Along with the packing I could use some help with everyday things. If you are willing to help please email or just come by.   92 Phenix ave West Warwick RI is the addresses. I thank in advance those who are kind and respond.

Hi James et al,

I spoke to a Newport club member who is also on the board of the Touro Synagogue and told me that the club will definitely activate the Synagogue. However, from what he said, it was apparent
that he doesn’t understand the nature of on the air events like this. He doesn’t envision getting on the air more than once or twice. I asked, “All year?” His reply was, “Well, asking
for more than that will probably not be well received.” So, we have more work to do there. Just activating the place once in all of 2016 will be a problem.

As you said, the Blackstone River Corridor doesn’t need to be registered each time it is activated because of the nature of the particular place. There are relatively few of the 430+ Nationally designated Parks in which a ham (or anyone) actually resides. Blackstone River Corridor includes 24 communities over 400,000 acres and hundreds of hams. CTRI members K6ND and W1YRC and any other resident hams of the district may merely walk into their shack and go on the air. We must promise to upload to LoTW ASAP. Since only LoTW confirmations will be used for the event, stations who are not using LoTW need not activate since they cannot provide any credit to stations worked. I don’t think all hams who have shown interest realize that yet.
K1NPS must open an LoTW account and someone must be designated to upload contacts made.

Jim, et al,

When I last heard from John W1XX he said “wait till next year”. I know that the Newport club has been notified and they’ve acknowledged the activity. I think, at least, one other club has been contacted. Bob W1YRC included info in his last Section Activity Report. The folks that live in the Blackstone Valley, i.e., W1YRC and Will K6ND, can operate from home. Bob YRC says that other types of activity must be coordinated through the League. I am not yet well versed on the details. As the Trustee, I would think that I must be aware (give permission??) of any use of the K1NPS call. Again, we need to work out the details of the NPS Centennial activation.

I too have not heard anything on the holiday lunch. Any suggestions guys?

Hi James

Any plan of attack for the CTRI with the new call? BTW, I have seen NO word regarding the next meeting or the holiday lunch. The last I saw was Chuck’s admonition that after making reservations last year, practically no one showed.

Merry Christmas and 73!
