Solar Eclipse QSO Party – Aug 21

The Solar Eclipse QSO Party on August 21 runs from 1400 until 2200 UTC. Stations will exchange a signal report and six-character grid locator on 160 through 6 meters (excepting 60, 30, 17, and 12 meters). Participants may work the same station again after 10 minutes have passed. Preferred modes are CW, RTTY, and PSK31, because automated receiving networks will record the contacts, but phone and digital contacts are okay too.

Meeting – July 8, 2017

The meeting on July 8th was attended by W1XX, K1DM, NG1G, K3IU, KB1RFJ, KE1J, KS1J, K1PAD, K1HSY, N1EYE, KC1FUU.

After a brief discussion of remote operation and it related ethics, remote operating aficionado KE1J Lars said that he would work on providing a demo. A few pesky details need to be worked out especially with the remote site providers. But Lars thinks this can be done. He will keep us all posted.

K1SD wasn’t available for a formal contesting report but John W1XX provided some final info on our Field Day 2017 efforts. First, one of the goals of Field Day is to expose the public to the capabilities of ham radio. This goal was more than achieved as visitors from our gracious hosts (the Skyscrapers) once again dropped by to see how the FD effort was proceeding. Also we had neighborhood visitors stop in and one young lady engaged in an extensive conversation with Molly KC1FTO. Hopefully her interest will be sustained and she catches the ham radio bug! According to John, we did well on two other fronts. Another goal of FD is to have fun and get members of the club to gather and renew their CTRI interests. Well last year we had a good turnout with 13 visitors but this year we had 26 club members either operating, listening in or just stopping by to rag chew. These were: W1AN, K1DM, W1XX, KB1RFJ, NG1G, KW2G, W1WBB, K3IU, KC1FTO, KC1FUU, WB2VVV, KE1J, KA1CQR (NOW NA1CN – Congrats on the new call Chuck), K1KI, W1YRC, KS1J, NR1H, W1HI, K1HSY, K1SD, K1SX, K1ECU, WF1B, K1FUG, K1JSM. On the second front, we broke last years record despite the crumby rain on Saturday morning. We landed 2062 points compared to last year’s 1954. Bonus points – Public Location (100); Public Info (Banner) – 100; SCM Message (100); K3IU copied Bulleting (100); Alt Power (Solar) – (100); Education- (100); Web – (50); Youth Participation – (40); Social Media (Lars) – (100) and Safety Officer (Bill W1WBB) – 100.

KE1J asked for FD photos so that he might post them on the clubs Facebook page.

K3IU – Ken moved to send $100 to Skyscrapers. This motion passed unanimously. We all greatly appreciate the hospitality the Skyscrapers have extended to us these past two years.

KB1RFJ Mike reported that the balance of the club treasury was $8,855.81. FD expenses were $129.06. KS1J extended thanks to Mike on behalf of the entire club for his commissary work and overall FD participation. Great Job Mike!

It was announced that Jule Knappik KB1YTT was the first recipient of the ARRL Memorial Scholarship sponsored by CTRI in memory of Chris. A thank you note was received.

K1JSM John is updating the website as time permits. When it is ready, he will let all know.

We had a good extemporaneous EME discussion. EME is possible with good yagi and 200 watts. Jon offered to bring his gear to a location to demo and would be willing to go to member’s homes as well. . This would be another great club project.

Kind of along the same subject, KS1J asked about JT65 and CTRI members who might be using for other than EME purposes. Pat NG1G said that he would exhume an old presentation that he had on meteor scatter propagation in which JT65 was used. Mike K1DM said a demo could also be setup using two laptops .

Mike K1DM reminded everyone that the upcoming Solar Eclipse will be the basis for a ham radio QSO party designed to generate data on the eclipse’s impact on propagation and the ionosphere. This will be on August 21. More details will be in the August QST.

The next meeting (August 12) will be at John W1XX QTH. Actually it is an antenna party disguised as a club meeting. We will be asked to resurrect John’s 160 antenna!

Finally the subject of the upcoming Boxboro Hamvention was raised. KS1J asked if the club would be interested in setting up a Flea Market table. It has been a while since this was done and I am sure there could be enough in our junk piles to populate a table. Further the table always served as a meeting point for members. However, it is a pain since it has to be manned all time. We will decide at the next meeting.

Next meeting is August 12

CTRI Field Day 2017:  Final Update #3

By John Lindholm, W1XX

Field Day Site:  47 Peeptoad Rd., North Scituate, RI, Seagrave Observatory

Field Day Dates:  Sat – Sun, June 24 – 25

Well folks, Field Day is almost upon us – this coming Sat-Sun, June 24 – 25.  It will be a fun event to which any and all are invited to join us.

Last Thursday. K1DM, K1SD, and W1XX largely cleared out the overgrown field of brush where the 40/20 wire beam is installed with a rope boom between huge trees.  Getting this antenna airborne will be project #1 Field Day morning and requires multi-hands to tie down the inverted-V elements.  W1XX, KW2G and K1SD will shoot lines over trees this upcoming Friday (10 AM)  prior to FD.

We need all hands on deck on Saturday morning at 9 AM.  Advisory:  Bring long pants, work boots, bug spray with DEET.

CTRI’s KE1S will be in the 2 transmitter class plus 6 meters and GOTA station – all at 100 watts from a generator.  Additional antennas are an 80 meter dipole, 6 meter Moxon, Triband beam, and GOTA antennas for 20 and 40.  All stations are set up indoors in the Seagrave assembly hall.

Our esteemed Commissary Captain KB1RFJ needs a final headcount on meals.  If you have not already been counted at the recent club meeting or responded to the website menu – wa1rr [dot] org – please e-mail Mike directly at:     visich4zoo@nullgmail.com

Indicate your presence at the following meals:  Sat lunch, Sat dinner, Sun lunch.

A word about operating goals.  We are a contest club.  We aim to be competitive.  At the same time we will have ample assistance to anyone needing help to gain familiarity with the radio or logging program.  Field Day should be a learning experience.

Bring a 5-spot for the best guess total QSO raffle.

Have fun!

CTRI June Meeting

BY K3IU, ON JUNE 9TH, 2017

Since nobody else seems to be doing anything just thought I’d put this up.

Check the Events Calendar on the right sidebar for time and place. I will pick up a few gut bombs from Ma’s Donuts on my way.

Be ready to learn all about out Field Day efforts.

CTRI Field Day:  Update #2

By John Lindholm, W1XX

Field Day Site:  47 Peeptoad Rd., North Scituate, RI, the Seagrave  Observatory

Field Day Dates:  June 24 -25

CTRI Pre-FD meeting:  Sat. June 10… 10 AM, N. Kingstown Free Library, Wickford

Since Update #1, Field Day plans have progressed nicely.  This Saturday’s CTRI meeting is very important to nail down any last minute details.  Your attendance and commitment is urgently encouraged.  Since our last update and still upcoming:

  1. K3IU will be copying the special W1AW Field Day message on Friday night.
  2. K1DM will captain our “alternate power” effort for bonus points with a solar panel.
  3. KW2G expects to have his potato gun launcher to augment W1XX’s bow-n-arrow for shooting lines for antennas on Friday afternoon prior to FD.
  4. KE1J has created an event for Field Day on Facebook – good for bonus points.  See  https://www.facebook.com/CTRI-301157730323702/
  5. We really need a participation headcount by the close of Saturday’s meeting primarily for food prep purposes. I can’t emphasize enough that this is an open invitation – member or not – to participate.  We need to know who will be at Field Day and when. Please try to make Saturday’s meeting to let us know of your intentions. Otherwise, e-mail John at w1xx [at] cox [dot] net.
  6. The “all hands on deck” time for Saturday Field Day setup is 9 AM at Seagrave.
  7. Important need: (1  The special 40/20 inverted-V wire Yagi is installed in the ‘back 40” – which requires brush clearing with gas powered weed wackers. We need 3 or 4 volunteers with equipment to do the job sometime next week – date TBD in coordination with Skyscrapers.  Bring bug spray with DEET.  (2)   We also need a couple of volunteers to assist KW2G/W1XX in launching lines for antennas to be installed the morning of Field Day.
  8. There will be plenty of assistance on Field Day to become familiar with the radio and logging program. One can also brush up ahead of time on the attached essentials of N1MM Logger+.
  9. All are reminded to bring a fin for our annual raffle for best guess on number of QSOs. Always fun…especially when you win!
  10. Final update post-Saturday’s meeting.  73!  — John, W1XX

CTRI Field Day 2017:  Update #1

We are renewing our unique partnership with “Skyscrapers” for our third Field Day from the Seagrave Observatory – thus a comfortable indoor operating venue. What has made the first two operations FUN from all accounts has been the fantastic operating site, the camaraderie of everyone pitching in to help, no heavy duty tower installations, and not to forget – great culinary delights.

Volunteer captain assignments oversee various aspects of the operation, namely:

Radios/computers:  W1AN

Commissary:  KB1RFJ + KE1J

GOTA Coach:  KS1J

Safety Officer:  W1WBB

Social Media:  KE1J

Log Submission:  K1DM

One of the highlights of our Field Day is the installation of the “killer” 40/20 wire beam that requires a host (plethora, bevy, or a lot) of hands to attach the many nylon strings dropping to ground level. Everyone participates with the overall installation as well as operating.

This is an open invitation to any and all to join us for Field Day – members, prospective members, interested folks.  This means YOU.  Further details in upcoming updates.  What do you need to do now?  Mark your calendar to keep Field Day weekend free – June 24 – 25.   Let us know of your interest either at the next CTRI meeting (June 10 at 10 am at the North Kingstown Free Library, Wickford), or e-mail me at W1XX [at] cox [dot] net.

TNX & 73! – John, W1XX, Field Day Chairman
