Leaderboard for 2015-2016 CTRI Champions Season

UNODIR I will update the leaderboard for the 2015-2016 season using the same contests as previously used. This list of contests was previously voted on and approved by the members in attendance. If anyone thinks this list should be updated, the next meeting would not be a bad time to bring it up. That would also be a good time to decide whether to continue with the handicapping scheme that was used for last seasons competition.

The currently approved contests are…

ARRL Sept VHF Contest
CQWW RTTY Contest
CQWW SSB DX Contest
ARRL Sweepstakes CW
ARRL Sweepstakes Phone
CQWW DX CW Contest
ARRL 160 Meter Contest
ARRL 10 Meter Contest
ARRL RTTY Roundup
ARRL Jan VHF Contest
CQ WPX RTTY Contest
ARRL CW DX Contest
CQ SSB 160 Meter Contest
ARRL Phone DX Contest
Russian DX Contest
CQWW SSB WPX Contest
New England QSO Party
CQWW CW WPX Contest
ARRL June VHF Contest
CQWW VHF Contest

There appears to be a conflict next year in that the ARRL January VHF contest (Jan 30 – Feb 1) and the CQWW 160 CW contest (Jan 29-31) are on the same weekend. It is also possible that I have made an error in my research of the dates for next year’s contests. Also, I have not found a date for the CQWW VHF contest next July.

August 8th Meeting Summary

CTRI Gang,

We had a relatively small crowd at the August meeting, not surprising, given it’s the middle of summer.  But, I’d like to give you who were not there a brief idea of what you missed.

Mike, KB1RFJ, updated us on his progress with getting his tower installed.  Most of the “paperwork” is finished now, and it’s getting down to the hardware work.  Stand by for a call for assistance.  James, K1SD, demonstrated his “Remote Operation” set-up, implementing the article in August, QST.  Nice job, James.  It was interesting seeing how all the software worked together.

If you are planning to go to Boxboro, and are interested in car pooling, get in touch with W1AN.  He’s planning an early morning drive through Rhode Island, to collect club members, and have some company.

That’s pretty much it for the meeting.  Our next gathering is in September at the North Kingstown library.  See you then, if not before.  Mike, K1DM, President.

Meeting 8 August 2015

Gentlemen,

The scheduled CTRI Contest Group meeting is set for this Saturday 8 August at 1000 at the North Kingstown Free Library.

Agenda topics that I can think of are:

Boxboro

KB1RFJ Antenna and Station Plans

K1SD demonstration of Remote Operating.

2014-2015 CTRI Champions Competition – FINAL Report

Well, this is the final report for the 2014-2015 contest season. This is the first year where we used a handicapping system proposed by the Contest Manager, NG1G. To learn more about the handicapping, see this posting on the club website…

You may view or download the final leaderboard spreadsheet by clicking on the link below. It is a Microsoft Excel 97-2003 format spreadsheet.

I will leave it to our Contest Manager to post his final analysis for this season by replying to this posting.

Also, if there is anyone else out there who would like to take charge of the leaderboard, all you have to do is volunteer. The pay is lousy, but the rewards many.:-)

I received the following email from Bob DeMattia, K1IW <k1iw@nullboxboro.org>…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the things that sets the Boxboro! Convention apart from your typical flea is our best-in-class forums. Our forum co-chairs Tom Walsh K1TW and Phil Temples K9HI have been working hard to bring you a wide variety of speakers and topics. Whether you want better your knowledge with something familiar to you, or you want to find out about something new, Boxboro! has something for you.
The forum schedule is now available on our website: http://www.boxboro.org.
New for this year, the convention will have an opening ceremony hosted by Gordon West. Come join us in the Federal Ball Room at 9AM on Satuday for what should prove to be a unique experience.
One correction to an earlier bulletin: Rob Macedo’s training on Friday is SKYWARN (not ARES) training.
Tickets for the convention, including general admission, flea market, and banquets are available on our website: http://www.boxboro.org
General admission tickets (only) are also available at Ham Radio Outlet in Salem, NH.
CTRI CG July 2015 Meeting Notice – This is Important!!!
Following the lively discussions on e-mail, as President of this group of rabid contesters, I hereby decree that this Saturday’s meeting will convene at 10:00 AM at the North Kingstown Library.  This is the same place we met for the June meeting, and where we have been meeting for the past several months.
Thanks for all the other options that were presented, reservations made, etc, etc.  I appreciate the several members that stepped up and took the initiative to help keep the ball in-play.  It’s especially gratifying to me to see everyone getting involved.  It’s all good.
We have two main topics to act on at this meeting: 1) Field Day Review, and 2) Boxboro plans.
Based on the success of the Field Day event, I am looking for someone to step up and take ownership of the Boxboro expedition.  I believe that will enhance the club experience at this event, just like Field Day matured under the leadership/guidance of W1XX.
See you all on Saturday morning.  Don’t forget that Traffic might be a tad bit excessive, so please allow a few extra minutes to get there.
73, Mike, K1DM, CTRI Contest Group President – I missed the meeting when elections were held, remember?
What, you may ask, is an interactive meeting notice? As the phrase suggests, it is a meeting notice which requires interaction by the readers. For example: we need to have topics for presentation at the meeting; we need presenters; we need volunteers to provide lunch; we need to know who is coming to the meeting so the quantity of lunch portions may be determined, and so on. This post will be updated as interactions (comments) are appended.
Field Day
Thanks to all for a great Field Day and especially to John, W1XX for getting this off the ground and coordinating it all, Ed W1PN for arranging the site, John W1AN for all the gear, Mike for the all the work in the commissary and to all the other participating club members. Personally I had a great time and I believe all will agree that we achieved the primary goal which was to work together on this project and have fun.
Again thanks to all. (Sorry if I missed anyone !!)
Surviving the storm – June 23, 2015
I hope you made out okay with this storm that went though Connecticut (and Rhode Island) this afternoon.  I had no significant damage, but I did lose the top of one tree, which took out my 40-meter dipole on it’s way down.  The 20-m dipole got tangled in the branches, but did not break.
Of course my 40-m dipole was my antenna for 40, 30, 15, and 10 meters.  I will get what I can done tomorrow, but I suspect the antenna will not be fully functional until after the 4th of July.  I have some commitments between now and then.
Good luck.  See you at Field Day!  73, Mike, K1DM
CTRI Field Day: Last Minute Notes…
CTRI Field Day: Last Minute Notes
By John Lindholm, W1XX
Field Day Site: 47 Peeptoad Rd., North Scituate, RI, home of the Seagrave Memorial Observatory
Field Day, June 27 – 28 is this coming weekend. CTRI’s W1DX will be in the 2 transmitter class plus 6 meter VHF. Details were ironed out at the CTRI meeting last weekend. Having a fun weekend of operating with our fellow club members is the goal. A team effort is needed. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with members who have been less active of late. Visitors are very much welcome. There will be ample help available to become familiar with the radios and logging program.
An advance crew will be on site starting at 10 AM Friday (June 26) to shoot lines over trees for antennas installed on Saturday. You are welcome then as well as any time during Field Day. Start time for setup on Saturday is 9AM. Many hands will be needed to install the 40/20/15 wire antenna array. Suggestion: wear long pants, work boots, and bring insect repellent.
If you would like to participate in the raffle for best guess on number of QSOs, bring along a fin ($5).
If we have not already heard of your intentions to participate, it would be helpful to the Commissary Captain to drop me an e-mail: w1xx [at]cox [dot] net. The CTRI Grill Team has planned an appetizing menu.
Don’t miss out on the fun. See you on Field Day!   73!
— John, W1XX, Field Day Chairman                                    6/23/2015
