The 2016 New England QSO Party results are now posted on NEQP [DOT] org. The good news is that CTRI again topped the New England clubs. The bad news is that we eked out the victory by a mere 339 points with 189,603 points over the Hampden County Radio Assn. Can you believe it? We — who hold the club record of over 1.5 million points in 2011 — almost lost to the HCRA. What a disgrace!
I suggest tbat we discuss CTRI participation in the 2017 NEQP (May 6 – 7) at our next meeting. Hey, conditions were terrible in the 2016 contest, but we can do much better. What say? — John, W1XX

Lew McCoy, W1ICP (SK) often said that if an antenna didn’t at some time fall down, it wasn’t up high enough. Seemingly, my 160 meter T-vertical with 72 feet vertical was high or tall enough. Here’s the result of the recent ice/snow/rain/wind storm where winds were recorded at 70 mph on Block Island. I can see Block Island (but not Russia) from my house. I think we’ve seen this story before.
It’s been over 3 years since CTRI manpower raised the antenna at a CTRI pre-meeting…so members willing, after repair, hopefully we can schedule a CTRI meeting again at my house for an antenna raising. We’ve always had great attendance at the W1XX venue, so we’ll plan on hotdogs and hamburgers again in the near future. Thankfully, I made it through the CQ CW and SSB 160 Contests unscathed before catastrophe.
Hope all your antennas made it through the storm. 73!!
Gents;
In my mailbox today was a certificate from ARRL. It informed me that I finished 7th place – US & Canada for the 2016 ARRL DX CW contest, which translated into 1st place Connecticut Section – Single Operator 80 meters (unassisted). (24,111 points).
Once again, pick your category judiciously. K1DM

Comments: This is a really fun contest. The really top contestants have some pretty elaborate stations especially antenna-wise. But you can have a lot of fun with far less. Sunspots — or the lack thereof — are just now coming into favor for the low bands. For us in New England, it’s all about working Europe. First night was not so good, but the 2nd night produced long runs of EU responding to my CQ. Plus you need to work as many of the states and provinces. The “RI” multiplier is always a boon…took me several hours to work before Ed, W1HI called in. Only other one was W1OP. The phone version of this contest comes up the last weekend of the month…so I encourage anyone to give it a shot. Antenna? Use whatever you got. Anyone else posting a score under “comments?”

Greetings, all,
Mike, K1DM, sent this today about another possible venue for February 4th’s meeting. We are scheduled to go to T’s restaurant but I wanted to throw this out there for the membership’s consideration. Time is short so please reply ASAP with your choice.
The Cadets at W1CGA would like to invite us to share their hamshack for the Feb 4th meeting. We can hold the meeting in the Communications Lab (home of W1CGA) and stay all day. Coffee and other food are be allowed. Mike will provide additional information about access to the Coast Guard Academy grounds if the meeting venue is approved by the CTRI members.
Following the meeting, it might be fun to introduce the Cadets to RTTY since the Mexico RTTY contest is that day.
There are some other issues regarding the W1CGA antenna farm that we may be able to assist with – more to follow.
Also, the Cadets are scheduling a VE Exam for later in February. We have about half a dozen already licensed, and probably 20 who showed up for the preliminary meeting this passed week! Very exciting. If you are a ARRL VE, and would like to help proctor the exam, please let Mike know. We could use some EXTRA class license holders.
73,
Pat, NG1G
Well, I certainly didn’t do as well as W1AN, but I did win First Place, Single Operator 6 meters in Rhode Island. I made 5 Qs for 15 points! Congrats on your big score, John, of almost 17,000 points and second place All Band in Ct.

The January CTRI Meeting is this Saturday, Jan. 14., at 10 AM in the main floor meeting room of the North Kingstown Free Library, 100 Boone Street., Wickford, RI. With the holidays, it’s been two months since our last meeting…so good time to get together for a program treat. Member Lars Mohlin, KE1J (ex-SM0GMG) will give a presentation on the Reverse beacon Network (RBN) .. info we could all use. Lars is one of the ops at the K2LE super contest station in southern Vermont. Not only that but K1DM, W1AN, K1SD, W1XX, and W1YRC will be wearing their NPOTA hats while giving a photo wrap=up of their multiple National Parks On the Air activations.
It’s been a long time since I hosted refreshments at my house…fortunately no antennas have fallen down…so I will provide the box of DD Joe and donuts. The agenda will no doubt include the usual items for discussion. So…see you at the meeting. 73 & HNY. — John, W1XX
